just wondering on how you change out a ring gear on a 79 f150 4 speed. it has the 351 modified motor. i can just get a new flywheel but a new ring gear is cheaper.
Ring Gears are easy to replace.
1) Rest the flywheel machined side down on a piece of plywood.
2) Use a hammer and punch to knock the ring gear off of the flywheel. You will need to work your way around the flywheel as you hammer off the gear.
3) Put the flywheel in a freezer for an hour. Put the ring gear in your oven at about 400 degrees for 15 minutes ( Make it the last 15 minutes that the flywheel is in the freezer.
4) Take the flywheel out of the freezer and rest in on a piece of plywood with the machined surface up.
5) Remove the ring gear from the oven and place it on the perimeter of the flywheel.
6) Use the hammer and punch (brass punch would be best) to drive the ring gear into position against the shoulder on the flywheel.
You don't really need to use the freezer/oven trick but it does make the job easier.
