USB ports problems

I'm having some issues with USB ports on my laptop.

Lately Firefox would crash and my laptop would freeze when I plug in digital camera and/or usb hard drive. I never had those problems before.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks

What brand laptop?

What OS? XP or Vista..

Have you tried going to the manufacturers website and see for an updated driver for the USB?

What happens? Does it just freeze or do you get an error screen?

Its HP Compaq nw8240. Windows XP.

First I get a message that there was an error and that Firefox needs to close. Then entire laptop freeze. Then I have to do ctrl+alt+delete in order to end usb program.

I should mention I have 3 USB ports and with one those problems are caused every time I plug in something in USB. Other 2 work fine most of the time, but sometimes same thing happens with them.

Dump Firefox and go back to Internet Explorer..

Only kidding... That seems to be the level of suggestions most give, like Dump IE and use firefox...

What I would do is download the latest USB driver from Compaq...

If that doesn't help, then go into device manager and try deleting the usb devices.. Reboot and they will reinstall..

Maybe it is a power related thing ? Not enough power through the card to run the extra ports

Check the Device manager for a yellow sign

Sounds like one port is just bad.... If I am understanding you, you said 2 ports work fine but it's only one port that causes this?
