i can hear a slight air leak around the top of the driver door on my 05 expedition. the dealer replaced the window regulator and made adjustments, but that didn't solve the wind noise issue. anyone know where to start?
Try making the door close tighter by bringing in the door striker. You need to loosen the two star/hex screws and tap the door striker plate in and re-tighten the screws and you should notice a difference in the door closing sound. It should sound more solid when the door shuts. That also helps when your door makes ticking noises. Hope that helps
Your door seal/gasket is not likely the problem. Don't mess with the striker adjustment unless you're sure the leak is around the door. The clue is that the dealer replaced the regulator. Chances are the window surround seal is not seated. Check the top rear corner. Mine likes to slide down from time to time, resulting in wind noise. Lower the window and pull the seal out from the rear of the door. Pull it up and make sure the gasket seats in the upper corner. That should cure the problem. Or, take it back to the dealer since they just replaced the regulator and tell them there's a problem.
yeah DMB, the noise is coming from the upper rear corner. but it was happening before i took it in for the regulator. actually, both issues were on the ticket and they only corrected the window and said that the wind noise "should" cease after adjustment of the regulator. i'll try rolling down the window and checking the seal tonight.
Also check/adjust as necessary the door seal gasket in the same manner (make sure the top rear corner is seated). I've seen the same problem with it sliding down a little. If adjusting both gaskets doesn't cure the problem, look elsewhere, including tweaking the door striker just a bit. Good luck.
i narrowed it down to the door seal gasket, because while i could hear the whistling i'd press the seal up tight and the sound would go away. had a new seal installed monday. only cost $78.
but guess what, drove at interstate speeds today and could still hear wind noise!! where do i look now?
ok, after the dealer replacing the door gaskets TWICE, i finally found the source of the wind noise. it's the window surround mounted in the door. you know, the piece your window follows and rest in while in the up position.
i picked the truck up on a thursday after they installed a new door surround ($161), and left for a road trip the next day. lo and behold, the noise was still there. so now i'm hell bent on finding the source of this noise.
i stopped at a pilot travel center and bought a roll of electrical tape. then i lined the entire door with tape. the noise was gone (of course). so then i started pulling sections off and listening as i drove *disclaimer* i'm not recommending you try this.
found the exact spot, then reapplied tape for the rest of the trip, basically so this noise didn't drive me crazy. when i returned home, i replaced the tape with a bead of RTV. worked like a charm.
what i had considered doing was installing some of those vent visors. the stick-on visors will cover the entire area where that trim meets the door. but see, i'm just not a fan of those vent visors. so i really hoped the silicone would work, and it did!
My 1999 expy was really noisy in the wind at the driver door. I tried adding double sided insulating tape to beef up the gasket to no avail. I traded it for a 2003 expy and have not had any problems with the newer one.
