is anyone running the 6637 piping from riffraff, i sent him an email yesterday and recieved a response back with pics, i am thinking of ordering it but wanted to see if anyone has some input on it, looks like clean setup.
He's supposed to be coming out with a version that is a piece of 4" tubing from the CCV fitting to the filter... still waiting on that one Clay (hint hint )
Define "swimming"? It seems to be a paper core filter. With one of Pete's covers - it'll probably handle a few splashes just fine... but if you're motorboating it you might consider a full snorkel kit.

Is this filter a viable option for me ?
If not what would be a descent intake set up for me
do you guys live like were there is not dust or dirt lol i normally wash under my hood everytime i wash my truck and i wash it at least once a week and she never looks as clean under the hood as ya'lls
Open CCV + Ignorance + Chevron Delo = Oily Smoke + New Air Filter
I live Socal... if the dust doesn't get it... the smoke from the seasonal wild fires or the genius with the leaf blower does. (At least once a week... this genius gives me a reason to wash the truck. I try to wash it just after they've been in the neighborhood.)
You would have to be a bit more careful washing under the hood - but unless your truck does a lot of swimming when you go off-roading... it's still cheaper and works better than most of what's out there. I am completely happy with mine.
To be completely fair - I did managed to mess mine up... as difficult as that might seem. I ran with my ccv open for a few days while I was working on the truck... the one time that I used Chevron Delo oil (never again... smokey, stinky stuff... my truck seems to absolutely love Rotella). It idled fine and ran great for regular driving - but I was losing power at high RPM... looked all over for the cause and realized that the smoke had gotten my very attractive Pete's Cover kinda dirty.
I finally put two and two together... and changed the air filter today. Turns out the oily residue is terrible for a paper core filter. Even though the filter didn't look too bad... the difference was like night and day. (I can't tell you how happy I was to realize that I was merely a victim of my own stupidity. ) Immediately I noticed a smoother idle, better acceleration and less smoke driving on surface streets in 'sport' mode. (If you're having fun... it'll give a little puff now and then to let the guy in the dodge know what you're thinking... and at wot it might still fog a prius) Getting on the freeway... the first on-ramp was a religious experience without the usual smoky fanfare. Turns out, this is the first time my trucks has been "right" since I did all the work. Got rid of my lag, no more bogging at high rpm, no more power loss at high RPM and more power than I've ever experienced in a pickup truck. All I could say was "WOW"... and continue grinning like an idiot.
On that note, I think I'm going to go back to using the stock filter minder for the time being, although I know folks have mixed feelings on it. There are apparently better quality versions available which I'll switch to when I get time.
A thought... If anyone is ever curious about just how much difference an air filter can make... I'll save my dirty one for the next dyno or track day.
One person asked me about not having any shroud around the filter to keep the engine heat away from the filter? i thought it was a good question. Isn't that why K&N and the like sell the kit with side walls around the filter? I want to do this mod but would like some feed back on this question.

Good question. Most manufacturers that sell "cold intake" stress the importance of eliminating engine heat. So what really is the deal on this?
I'd be interested in this info too. Does anyone sell these or at least have plans with measurements that can be used to make a cold air box for the 6637?

Yes, manufacturers are good at selling points to convince you to buy their product. I don't think the whole cold air thing makes that much of a difference. Once you are at highway speeds, underhood temps aren't too far from ambient temps. It's only when you're stopped idling that you will have an appreciable temperature variance. From a power standpoint, then it doesn't matter.

Mark,
I used a 3" ID, 4" OD PVC coupler to replace the CCV coupler, but did what you did with the filter. However, I had a piece of 4" OD SS exhaust sent to me a while back and replaced the coupler and put one on the 6637 connection as well. The PVC after almost a year was starting to distort, so I think it's a good idea to use the metal piece instead. For one, it has a much wider ID than the PVC, and it certainly won't distort. I also found that the 6637 neck kept getting smaller & smaller under the load of the clamp (which is why you have to keep an eye on it and keep it tight). In fact, I had a heck of a time getting the exhaust to fit inside the neck. I had to use a hair dryer and quite a bit of force to get it down in there.
Here is before:
Here's after with the SS pipes in place:
It works with PVC and/or directly connecting the filter to the tube, but it's better with the pipe and there's no worry about it coming loose. I was constantly worried about it popping off before, now I'm quite sure it ain't goin' nowhere...
Looking to do mine this weekend. I understand the 4" dia exhaust for the sleeve, but what is the length of that piece? I was hoping I'd have a little left over from my exhaust. But I didn't. Gonna go by a muffler shop and see if they have any scrap
NAPA 6637 filter 4"od x 4 long pipe
4" constant velocity clamp
You win. I am sure you could figure out the proper order from that, but there is a link in my sig that will show you how to do it, IIRC. It is simple! If you want to get a little more complicated there is a cold air box option that just came out last week. That would be a pretty sweet little improvement.
Post #2 in this OLD thread.
P.S Miss ya Markadeck! Hope we will meet one day when my time comes.
