I am somewhat mechanically challenged and I want to change my tranny fluid myself. I have read the step by step instructions on here but still am confused.
If somebody could give me idiot proof instructions that could get me through this I would be thankful.
I am not sure what tranny I have, how much fluid I should buy, what line to disconnect, should I change the filter....this is all confusing to me.
I would like to take the pan off to clean the magnet.....If I do....what should I torc the bolts to when putting them back on.
Ford doent recomment changing the filter.....some say do change.
Help me with simple instructions.....should I pump the old fluid out. I dont know? Help me?
You have the 4R70 if it is with that 4.6L. Replace the filter it just pulls off and pushes back on. Buy a good 4 qt's more fluid than recommended. I want to say 12qt's is the recommendation for a full flush so get a good 16qt's. Unhook both cooler lines if you are unsure which is the supply line then turn the truck on it will pump out by itself, just make sure to shut it off as soon as it starts to run dry. There will still be fluid in the pan so watch out when you remove it. I can't remember the proper torque on the bolts but it is probably on 20lbs or so. You want to crisscross when you put them in, much like putting a tire on, to make sure the pan snugs up straight.
I used 12 quarts with my trans fluid change. I have the 4R70. Didn't change the filter until I replaced the trans cover with a Mag Hytec hi capacity cover. I had 160,000 plus miles when I change the filter and even then I don't know if it needed to be replaced. Heard the same thing about not needing to change the filter but since I had it off.....
the trans pan holds 5 quarts. change the filter inside and clean the magnet. look a foot forward of the pan and see a 4 inch oval hole in the bottom of the bell housing looking up at the torque converter. if you bar the motor over with a big screw driver on the ring gear, you will see a small plug on the bottom of the torque converter. pull the plug and drain another 8 quarts. dont need to pull any lines or hoses, etc... after the oil is all drained, put the plug back into the converter with loctite. change filter and install the trans pan. rotate around to get all bolts "snug" then final tighten. 20 ft pounds sounds about right, i do it by feel, not a torque wrench.-- reuse the pan gasekt.
the engine oil should be changed every 5000 miles. the transmission is a good idea to change the first time between 30-50,000 miles to get any initial wear crud out, then every 50k after that. doing it sooner than later might help keep crud out of the shifting spools and help at a later date. i think this is real important on a vehicle like the Explorer with 5 speed elect trans.
