My neighbor bought this 90 F-150, the guy he bought it from says that it has a 351W in it, not the original 302. Is there any way to tell by looking at anything on these to tell what they are other than getting in there and measuring the stroke? I do know that the 351W has a higher deck height than the 302 but how could this be measures without some sort of a reference point?
If you can reach the bottom bolt of the thermostat housing with a straight extension and a socket then it's probably a 351W. That bolt on a 302 is kinda below the top of the water pump/ timing cover, and it can only be accessed with a wrench or swivel socket.
