I recently bought a used engine. on the aircleaner lid it says
351 4V HO .the engine ID# is E4AE-6015-FA. I was told I was buying a 351W;the carb is 4BBLFord mfg by HOLLEY. the measurement across the with
of the intake looks the same as my 302. I am not sure what it is.
please help,thanks Trucklover.
There definitely should be a difference in the width of the intakes. The only other thing I can think of that might be easy to check would be the size of the oil pump driveshaft. If I remember correctly, a 5/16 nutdriver or socket will fit a 302, a 3/8 nutdriver or socket will fit over a 351w. I don't know if I got the sizes right, but the 351w does have a larger shaft and a larger hole on the bottom of the dist gear.
I have an 85 F250 4x4 with a 351w HO and it came with a holley 4bbl, and another thing is I also have an 84 F150 with a 351w that is always mistaken for a 302 whats the deal with that? Thanks.
Both the 302 and 351W have the same valve covers (6 bolts). The 351W has a 2" wider centerdome due to the taller deck. Check the firing order on the centerdome (in front of the carb),
302= 1 5 4 2 6 3 7 8
351W= 1 3 7 2 6 5 4 8
I was told by the previous owner of my truck that it has a 302 firing order. Has anyone heard of a 351w with a 302 firing order or is it possible that my engine is a 302? Thanks for the help.
Yes, you can interchange the cams, then move the sparkplug wires around, and have a 351w with a 302 firing order, or vise versa. But this will not change the firing order numbers cast into the intake, and I bet this would be a good way to tell what you have.
I tried to look for it thinking that it would be on there and then I asked my dad and he said he wasn't sure that it would be on the intake do to the fact that I have an Edelbrock intake on my truck. Would it still be on there? Thanks
LAST EDITED ON 02-Nov-01 AT 11:05 AM (EST)[p]Exactly. The Edelbrock intake manifold is stamped right on the front, near your upper radiator hose/thermostat. I have a 351W and the intake is a cast aluminum Edelbrock Performer series, and it is stamped right on the front where I described. In cursive script is the raised Edelbrock signature, and just below it it reads "351 Performer" in bold raised lettering. I don't think it will say 351W on yours, because the intakes for the Cleveland, Windsor and Modified were all the same size and bolt up pattern I believe. Could be wrong on this, but I'm pretty sure...mine doesn't say 351W, just 351. It will also be stamped in the same location if it's a 302, will probably read the same as mine but with the raised 302(assuming it's Performer series and not Victor, RPM, or Torker II series, I have no idea what those read).

Just to let you know, 351w,351c,351m all take different manifolds. Among other things, 351c and 351m don't have water passages in the intake. And the difference between a 351c and 351m is caused by the same thing as the 302 and 351w-taller deck on 351m which means it is wider than a 351c. Aren't Ford engines fun!
Hi Guys !? I have more news on my engine. The intake # are E6TE-9425-0A. on the block under the intake is "351 WCP1 7"
The R EX is E5TE9450BA flange is flat;L EX is E5TE8431BA flange is convex toward the exhaust pipe.the intake is 11 inches
across the exact width of the intake. thanks for all your help.

302 and 351w are both members of the winsor class, but the 351 is 1 inch taller and 1 inch wider than the 302. the firing order is the same on early motors . the firing order changed when these motors went to liter instead of cubic inch descriptions. I had an early 351 motor sent out for rebuild and it came back with the new firing order due to late model cam being installed. if there is no other obvious way to tell which you have,you can always remove the intake manifold. If it is a 351, it will be cast into the valley of the block. If the i.d. on the motor says H.O. that is a high output option usually found in mustangs or ranchero g.t.
351w almost looks identical to the 302, except there is about a 1.25 inch gap between the timing cover and the deck, where a 302 they are even. Look at where the head bolts onto the block, if there is a space between that and where the timing cover is, chances are it's a windsor. That's the easiest way I know to tell the difference.
