F250 A/C Compressor

We just returned from an RV Trip out in Big Bend National Park along the Rio Grande River in TX. While 4-wheeling, my A/C stopped working. After about 30 minutes, I got a flat in my rear passenger tire, and the hole was pretty serious. It looks like the front part to the a/c compressor is missing, so I'm guessing that it loosen, and the a/c stopped working. It then fell off (or flew off), and I ran it over to get my flat. I don't have the old piece, so this is just speculation.

Does anyone know where I can see a picture of the front of the a/c compressor clutch? Can I buy just that piece, mount it, cross my fingers, and have cool air again? Or, it is likely that I will need to replace the whole compressor? If I buy just the clutch, it doesn't come with whatever is in front of it. If I bought a used compressor, maybe I could swap out the front piece. How big of a job is it to replace the ac compressor?

I also see in previous posts that the clutch spacing is important. Will I need to make an adjustment?

I have a 2003, SuperDuty 6.0, 4x4, Lariet, Super Crew Cab. By the way, for anyone who has a concern about the repuation about 2003's, I have to say that this animal tows like a dream. I love passing the little red sports cars when I'm towing my 35 ft 5th wheel. Now, if I can just get my ac back; it gets hot in TX.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Nope... That's what happened. My '03 dropped the pulley too, but it landed on top of the external oil filter and the frame. You speculation is completely plausible! Go to the bone-yard and get the pulley and the one small bolt that holds it in place. When you install it, use Loctite so it never works its way off again!

FYI to everyone!
This is a MUST DO PM!!
Remove the pulley bolt and loctite the bugger back in so you never have this happen to you!

a/c

ozx3+1 is correct again. The front bolt will back out and inturn the hub ( Fords Term) falls off. According to my repair order they replaced the disc assembly and shimmed it to 0.17 and loctite the front bolt. The operation of the a/c unit was not damaged. They replaced the parts and sent me on my way. Mike

Thank you for the quick responses.
The spec that M Kelly provided for the spacing is 0.17; is the decimial point in the right location? Should that be 0.017?

Ed, I appreciate your diagram; if I don't fix this tonight, I need to wait a week for the "free time," so I bought the parts locally. I'll bookmark you site for future parts.

Tim, sorry about the multiple posts. I'll clean up my mess and keep it simple next time.

Thanks again. -- Steve

decimal point

Steve,

I'm not sure about the decimal point. I copied the number from the dealer work sheet. I have a new clutch assembly for a taurus sho and the shims are waffer thin. The clutches are probaly totally different but the shims should roughly be similar. Mike Kelly

The correct number is .017". That's seventeen thousandths.

At a hundred and seventy thou, the clutch won't engage at all. Too much air gap. By a factor of ten! :-))
