Smile Need better MPG help!!!

The price of fuel is killing me It is $4.09 here in Az. I am only getting 11.8mpg per the display. Big red is an 01 f350 sc lb with leveling kit (we think, bought it with it on it) 35's, straight 4" exhast, KN filter, 100 gallon tank in bed. The truck has 105K miles on it. We are looking at getting an SCT X3 programmer in the next day or so but dont know what else to do. HELP!!!

Thanks,
Cris

I went with the DP tuner and it does help the gas mileage in 80 econ...but its too much fun to just floor it...

those 35" tires also do not help gas mileage much as a lot of effort is going into moving those things...also never trust the display...use the odometer and divide miles by gallons at ur next fill up...the electronic ones are always a little off.

If you get a DP and take it easy on the gas...you could see some extra mpg...

Also never underestimate maintanence of ur vehicle...check fuel filter, oil, IC boots, and up pipe. if you see soot all over the last 2 u might have a leak. Others will chime in with more experience who can help you...but its a start

Completely forgot to ask...

Is your mpg mainly highway, city, or both? I could not imagine filling up a 100 gallon tank in the bed of my truck...thats a lot of $$$.

Lose the 35s. If not make sure that the speedometer is correct and hand calculate the fuel millage. Correcting the speedometer may require a reflash or a installation of a programmer at allows for speedometer correction. If you are under geared your millage will also suffer.

On the highway, I push 20 MPGs, with 35s and 6.5 inch lift w/373 gears. Check your up pipes and turbo boots. There is something wrong.

I'm in the same boat and I have a DP and keeping my foot out of it. About 80% highway and only getting 11.7- 12 at best. I only have 33in tires and no lift at all but plenty of mods that should make the mpg go up, but right now I don't know whats up and it sucks with the price of fuel. I have already checked, cleaned, and tightened all my boots.

You've all the right things done, and sound like you drive with some degree of sanity, so I have no explanation for you. Wish I did. I can be careful and squeeze out 24 mpg hwy, and get 20-21 around town all the time.

Before I get flamed here, I do not even have a lieometer, spend up to 20 minutes topping off the tank, and am just as good at math as I am with grammar and spelling. Thanx Mom!!

I finally don't have to waste my time topping off the tank. I did hutch/harpoon mod last week, and it only took me 20 seconds to top off tank, and I could see fuel in the neck. I love that mod.

If I thought I was going to "continue" for even another year I too would like to do this mod. Cuz it's a rea pita to top off the tank in cold weather.

I have got to do that mod. I am tired of the 10-15 minute fill-up. SO is the guy behind me in line....

To the OP Jgrnaut, I am wondering if you may have a situation with the EBP tube being clogged. When then weather warms a bit more, I am going to clean mine. I am hand calculating at around 12 myself(without compensating for the tire size differential so it could be around 14). All my boots seem tight too. I'm getting good boost numbers, so I'm thinking that I may have the dreaded clogged tube. It may be the same for you two too.

Might have to check that. I know I did it awhile ago and there was some stuff in there but didn't have time to fully clean it out. If you think that would create that much loss in mpg I'll do whatever it takes.

What kind of 35's? The more aggressive the tread, the more rolling resistance. For mileage, highway tread is probably best.

Carrying around and extra 100 gallons of fuel can't help mileage either though... empty that and save over 700 lbs.

I actually got a little bit of an MPG increase by doing the Zoodad mod. That may be mainly because the factory rubber shield was partially blocking my snorkel opening though, be sure to look for that. Not good!

I have 35" M/T Baja ATs on an '02 EC/LB and get ~13 in town/ 15+ highway with a Superchips Flashpaq on the middle tune. With a good tailwind I got 17 on a trip a few weeks ago.

I plan on going with the 6637 filter next to see if that helps. Probably not with the added induction noise, it will probably suck my foot to the floor more.

Once I save some more $, I will do 4" exhaust, then the Superchips is going on Ebay and a DP-tuner will be on order too.

Darren

Its a cheap mod too, Fram see thru filter was $4.99 @ Checkers, a little 5/16" fuel hose, a brass coupler and 3/8s" stainless tubing was $14.99 for 3' @ Ace. They sell kits too for $30 bucks plus shipping. I have enough SS tubing and hose left to help my friend with his truck this weekend. Someday I'll get my gauges in, thats if I can get all the dust off of them.
