I clipped a small deer the other morning which resulted in very minor damage to my Ranger work truck. I am experiencing tail light troubles and haven't been able to overcome them yet. Can amy one give a little help with this. The accident started at the front left headlamp with nothing more than a couple of hairs caught in the trim. The deer spun around and put a tiny crease in the driver door. then left some more hair in the lower corner of the left side of the bed itself. Afterwards we have lost the tailights only, i have brake lights, flashers, turn signals and back up lights. I have pulled every fuse diode, and relay out and nothing seems to be burnt. I also took the ground cable off of the battery to disconnect the whole system. Still don't have any tail lights. Any help would be appreciated.
Welcome, sorry about accident. What year is your truck ? If I have the manual for your model year, I will look at the wiring diagrams. BTW, have you checked the bulbs?
Yes i did check the bulbs. I even put in a brand new one. Tonight i checked the bulb socket on the left rear and had power on one of the 3 wires when the brake was pushed on. I never got power on the brown wire at the rear plug for the running lights. i even went up underneath the truck to see if it looked like we cut the bundle and it didn't. There are a couple of ground screws up in the engine compartment that i even loossened and tightened again to try and make a differnt contact point. By the way it is a 1994 Ranger. Any help would be great. Thanks and have a great Day! Sincerely Bruce
Hello Bruce,
Sorry for delay in getting back to you.Believe you should look at connector C401-8 terminals,T1 #14 Br connects both tail lights,T2 #5 O/LB connects Rt turn light,T3 #57 BK=Gnd.,T4=No connection,T5 #9 LG/O Lt turn light,T6 #140 BK/PK=Back up lights,T7 #511 LG=Brake lights,T8=No connection.C401 is located below tailgate, under bumper slightly to the left of midline. You may find the brown wire is cut or T1 may be corroded. If you have 12 volts @T1with the lights on,that will confirm the wiring is good to that connector.Hope this helps. If you need more info let me know.......Ed
Good evening. I just got back in the house from looking again. Tonight i took 3 ground wires off and cleaned them. One from the battery post that attaches in the from off the engine compartment and two that come out of the wire harness and attach to the side of the engine compartment. Still no luck. Last night i didn't have any power down under the rear of the bed were the wire harness hooks together. I am going back down and look a little bit more. Will update you later on. THanks alot, i'm actually horrible at car repair, but can't and don't like paying huge repair bills if i can help it.
You may have the trailer towing package... which has a relay on the inner fender, drivers side, or on the radiator support, drivers side. The relay is used to power the trailer lights, and *may* be used for the truck lights too. If the deer whacked that side, it could have jarred or bumped the relay.
Does the amber side light on the front fender come on? It is in the same circuit as the parking and tail lights, and also on when the headlights are on. That would indicate if the switch is working or not.
