I haven't had a speedometer in my 85 for a few yrs. I have been using the tach {typical redneck/nascar style}
So I finally bought a speedometer cable, was all excited...took off down the road..nothing...I know there is another gear in the tranny which leads me to the question....where is that little booger, and how much of the tranny needs to come apart?
85 f150 351w NP435 manual tranny 4x4
Have you inspected the plastic gear? That should be on the housing that the speedo cable screws onto. There should be some sort of retainer that holds it to the side of the transfer case, and then the whole thing comes out.
If you have done that already, then take the housing above out, and then try to get a flashlight and a mirror and look in the hole for the gear on the output shaft.
NO, I haven't looked in it. I bought a new cable thinking that was all I needed.
I'm going back out to try to look in the hole to see whats going on.
It dawned on me also I have 33's on it now, So I'll have to calculate what size gear I need as well right?
If we assume you have a 208 transfer case, here's a picture, and in view "Y" you can see the speedo housing and it looks like it's held in with a little c clip. http://www.autozone.com/images/cds/g...3d800a83f1.gif
I honestly don't know what the transfer is....I think it's all original. 351w NP435 granny gear, guess It would be a 3 speed???? 1st being the granny, 2nd being 1st, 3rd being 2nd and 4th being 3rd???
I need to research more I guess
