AOD Kickdown Linkage

I'm having trouble with the throttle linkage travel on my AOD; the bracket I fabbed for the kickdown seems to limit the range of throttle linkage movement. I had to modify the original due to the shifter linkage for the Lokar classic stick I am using. (top linkage unattached in picture. Looking at modifying the kickdown linkage again but not sure if that will cure the issue. any ideas as to how I should proceed ? Attempt at posting picture from my gallery, under cab mods with this post.

Hey Tip, I think Lokar makes a cable and bracket for your application? BUT whatever you do, you need to get yourself a PSI gauge for your trans so you can set it properly. If it's not adjusted properly, it will BURN up the clutches very quickly!

In a nutshell, with the gauge insalled to the trans, the PSI should go up just before the engine RPM's go up (while running, and at operating temp) If your limiting your throttle movement, of course you know already you've got something too short. There should be enough free travel to put the throttle to the wide open position. I forgot where to connect the gauge, I'll have to look at my book unless someone else chimes in here??

GOD bless!!

linkage travel

I had some time today to fool with the kickdown linkage; when not connected to the throttle, the lever on transmission only travels about 3/4" along the horizontal axis. There doesn't seem to be any obstruction to limit the lever movement. The throttle movement will definitely be restricted if connected to the kickdown. I guess I'll have to have a transmission shop look at it sometime in the future.

From what I see in the picture you need to get rid of everything and go with the Lokar cable and brackets like TRUX'S said. one other thing I see that may help, You can pull the cable forward from the top like you have it or you could hang the linkage down and pull it from the back as long as the shaft is moving counter clockwise, it's the same thing, plus it might give you the additional room it appears you need for the shifter linkage. Also look on the Lokar web site the instructions are on a pdf. file, it may help you understand what im trying to explain.

tip49, You could make your own lever, your handy with a welder...dust off that geometry book, and give it a go..
I once saw this addressed on a carb kickdown linkage, it amounts to allowing your throttle to move a 'lever',,the pivot being at the shift linkage. Might need someone up under the hood to move throttle ,while your down below with a disconnected cable and taking measurement...be sure and leave an adjustment!!
Or you could do like I did and just get the Lokar unit..they do the headscratching part,
And it looks cool... Good Luck!

linkage

Thanks guys; I dropped the cab off two days ago for spot painting. Hopefully I will be putting cab on frame for last time in April. I waffled on the paint color, went from Marron nto original color, Meridian Blue. I pickup box sides and front today, are in EP. Box to be assembled by end of April, then on frame.

I will be looking again at Lokar linkage, I will tackle this quirk my next days off in two weeks.

Linkage update

Finally got time to look into my linkage issue; went to pick a part and got another linkage bracket; cut and modified and lo and behold the thing actually work s! I took care in tracing the geometry of the original and copied to my "extended" bracket. Whatever, it now seems to work. This has been a major issue in getting the truck on the road to test drive, so now on the next of many things to do.

Coming together is it?...Once you get the throttle "mechanically " working,it's time to get the trans and carb in time with each other, this will require the pressure gauge final adjustment mentioned above...any professional trans shop should be able to dial-it in for you.Trans life will be short without it...Good Luck!

FYI.. the cable on the AOD tranny is NOT a kickdown cable like on the C6, on the AOD it regulates line pressure inside the tranny and must be connected to the throttle and set with the correct preload, failure to do this will result in a burnt up tranny in short order.

I just installed the Lokar on my AOD. I had problems with the travel on my trans link and what happen was I had taken the arm off of the trans. On the inside of the trans is a spring to return the trans to idle. It comes off and then you can't move the link full range. You have to drop the pan and put the arm on and hold the spring in place. That linkage should return and move full swing with no problems.
They are correct also in that the trans must be adjusted to increase PSI as you increase throttle. If not sure take it to a trans guy for adjustment or you'll pay alot more in the end.

Yeh.. I lost an AOD after about 5 miles cause it was adjusted wrong.

THEN I found out about the pressure test. $1250 too late

I was drinking when I adjusted mine and then we haul it to the tranny shop and put the gauge on it and never had to touch it again. The trans guy couldn't believe it. So we celebrated.

see, THAT was my problem.
1. I wasn't drinkin at the time
2. I didn't haul it over there.. (now that I have a trailer, things would be different.. (yeh sure!)..)
