^^ Correct Bob. The oil itself doesn't wear out as you indicated. It picks up all that "nasty" stuff and the add pack in the oil gets depleted after awhile also. the API cert is important, but there are also other certs oils can carry that state they've met special test such as BMW's Long Life Test. Most of the more expensive synthetic oils carry these certs. Usually on the back of the bottle.

all oppinion's appreciated, I try an change my oil around 2500 miles, ( It is easier to keep track of that way ) and the penzoil has been good to me an my truck, so i guess i will stick with it. The manufacturer suggest's 5w 30, but i have people tell me that i should switch to 10w 30, because of my mileage, which is now 104,000, at or close to. What do you guy's think ?? Thank's

the first number is how thin/thick the oil is at startup. they're both 30 weight oils. Being that the oil weight rating is a range, it would depend on the blend whether or not it's a thick or thin 30 weight oil. Usually can refer to a Product Data Sheet for specific information.
