My bother in law just bought an 04 6.0 Excursion. I took it for a drive today and it has almost zero turbo lag. His truck is stock. I then drove 04 6.0 Ex home and when I floor it instanatly it does nealry nothing for 1.5-2 seconds and then it takes off and pulls hard. Why is my turbo lag so much greater than a 6.0 Ex of the same year? Could there be something wong? I am taking mine in cuz now I am not happy after driving his! Is there something I can tell the diesel tech to be looking for? It has driven this way for as long as I can remember...........Any ideas??
Could be that the EX has a different flash then your truck, could be it has a newer turbo, could be a boost sensor, maybe a boot on your inter cooler. There are a number of reasons, the biggest reason could be that no two fords run exactly alike. Something to do with the laws of physics, along the lines of two like objects occupying the same space. It would disrupt the entire space time continuum.
I have the original flash in my 04 X. It is the one with the aggressive tranny upshift and downshift program in T/H mode. Now having said that when I first got the X, I would pull out in traffic and the damn thing would not go. Sometime traffic had to stop until I got going. I was pissed. The almighty 6.0 falls flat on its face. Go figure! So I removed the cat and left the rest of the exhaust stock. That helped with throttle response and reduced the lag about 40%. Then I installed an EDGE programmer and some more lag disappeared. Next, I got a T-back MBRP and installed it without the cat. Turbo lag was eliminated. FWIW!
I also have quite a bit of turbo lag, even after pulling the turbo and cleaning it out. Anyone else have input on this?
my input is that 03's lag more than the rest of the years. I think it's because the exhaust side is like 3mm bigger or something like that and it has less impellers. I know for sure the number of impellers plays a role. When I'm stock tuned, mine lags pretty bad also.
I thought mine was lagging alot too. Ive had it since august, it does great pulling my trailer, once you get going that is! Its going in this next week to get the muffler pulled out of it. Not much dough so we start out slow!

03s do lag more. When the stock turbo crapped out on me and I was over at Bean's we put in Matt's old 03 turbo on my truck(I loved that whistle at low rpm) and I definately had to ease into it. Easing into the throttle is probably the cheapest way to eliminate lag and I had no problem with getting out in front of traffic, but I also had the bigger injectors at the time I got that turbo as well.

My '04 is the same way; if I put my foot down fast I will hold up traffic but when I ease the pedal down it performs well.
OK so I'm not the only one out there with a lag issue. But what I have not herd is that when I;m @ about 60mph and go to the floor , my truck just laughs @ me and does nothing unless I come back of and slowly ease into the throttle again. Almost like the wast gate is sticking. 4" exhaust all the way no cat/muf. Banks high intake, and airraid filter set up. 04 f-350 sd. Any ideas?
There is no waste gate, could be a sticking VGT actuator. Mine feels the same way sometimes but its because I have 35s with 3.73s so my rpms are really low at 60mph and I just about have to kick it down a gear to accelerate. Luckily I have a set of 4.30s in the shop waiting to go it to fix this problem What size tires and what gearing do you have?
I'm glad I checked out this forum because I have had the same issues all of yu guys are having with my 04 6.0 Excursion. This engine when it runs good is a lot more fun than the 7.3 but when you compare the 2 side by side the 6.0 is a piece of junk. I have 3 trucks with the 6.0 in it and 4 with the 7.3, 7.3 a tried and true design that feels reliable !!!!!! Now if I only had time to drop a 7.3 into my excursion.
