I'm hoping to borrow my parents hitch for a trip that I'll be making but in case that falls through, any specific ones you guys recommend? I think they have the equal-i-zer. It would be used 90% of the time hauling a 20' open car hauler with 3000lb race car, some tools, and some spare tires. Towing with 03 4x4 Expy with 5.4.
Ya, I was talking about the whole thing. I wasn't sure how often I would use it if I were to buy one. Since the track is only about 10 miles from the house. I do think it is necessary for my move from Oklahoma to PA though. They use theirs on their camper and I wasn't sure how hard it would be to remove. My mom said she would ask my dad how hard it was to remove and hten figured I'd decide then whether to buy my own or use theirs. I guess it never hurts to use it even when the trailer isn't heavily loaded right?
Imho, I would buy my own. It is not as easy as unbolting it and installing it on another trailer. It has to be set up for that trailer and truck. The head tilt will have to be reset along with the brackets and height of the brackets. The tongue height will also have to be reset. RVwholesalers has the Equal-i-zer for $399. It is easier to buy it once and set it up once than it is to move it 4 times and re-set it 4 times.... make that 8 times... once for your trailer and then once for your mom and dad's.
Returning it to your parents trailer shouldn't be too bad, just mark the location of all the brackets on the trailer and the angle/ht of the receiver. Setting your trailer up for a one-time trip will probably be more of a hassle, depending on the difference in height of the trailers, size of the A-frames, etc.
Thanks guys. I think i'm going to try to borrow theirs. I'll take the time and put it back. Kinda tough to justify spending $400 right now for just one trip.

I totally agree that you should get your own, for the same reasons mentioned above. Too many times you see a RV or trailer of some sort going down the hiway too high or too low at the hitch area. Each causes its own problems and you should have yours set up for your vehicle and then you would never be running an unsafe set up, IMHO.
If you are going to do it, do a web search for reese hitch instructions. There is a pdf file out there that has pretty easy to follow instructions for the setup.
Also be sure to measure the size of the A frames of both trailer and make sure the U-bolts for the snap brackets will be long enough.
Don't mean to hi-jack this post. But is setting the equalizer hitch difficult? Can the average meathead do it or would you recommend taking the truck/hitch/trailer to a professional?
