Wont start

The truck is a 1987 Ford 6.9 Diesel, the owner says that the truck will not start after sitting overnight, so he replaced the glowplug realy and glowplugs, and still no go. But it will start if you coast start it. Any ideas what the problem might be?

How fast is the engine turning over when you crank it?

Several possibilities,
starter on it's last legs
battery cables are shot
Air intrusion into the fuel system.

Probably either poor batteries or a slow starter......... you should NOT be able to count engine RPMs on a start.

how do you check the glow plug controller? i tested some things and the new selinoid was staying on all the time, must of put the wrong kind on.

If you cranking and cranking, and all this stinky white smoke is coming out of the tailpipe but it won't start, then I would worry about the glowplug system.

If you do not have all the stinky white smoke, then I would start worrying about the fuel system and fuel delivery.
