Hey guys, I just finished up my 400 rebuild and started it for the first time. My oil pressure at start up was around 75-80 psi at idle. After it warmed idle pressure was 20-25. When the motor is at 2000 rpm the pressure is 50-60.
Is this mormal? I was expecting more oil pressure than that. My 351m when I did a main bearing change only, was higher psi than that. Do 400's usually not have as much oil pressure? I used a reground crank and new bearings and a new oil pump. I plastigauged them too and all was well. I put assembly lube on all bearings and pumped and primed the oil pump.
Thanks, Jaret
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-14-03 AT 10:13 PM (EST)]The oil is straight 30 weight castrol heavy duty. What is the best oil weight for break in?
Its probably fine. I was just expecting more. The oil pump is a standard pressure pump.
Thanks, jaret
That sounds about right to me. The oil can get really hot during breakin and should be changed after the first 20 minutes or so. I prefer 10w40 in winter and 10w50 summer.
