hello all. my wifes sister's escape wont start i went to look at it peekd in the cover by the cam gears and see the timing belt is extremely loose so i guess it broke or the tensioner broke. she said she went to start in this morning and it wouldnt start ran fine last nighT. it must have broke on start up this am.
My question is this a interferance motor? How hard is it too change the escape timing belt? Im a great mechanic i just dont want to get in over my head. any special tools needed. It is a 2002 escape I4 engine 125000 miless
thanks
chris
According to the Gates book the 2.0L I4 is an interference engine. The belt interval is 120,000 miles but obviously that doesn't matter if your's already broke. My understanding is that you have to have a special alignment tools to align the cogs properly on the Zetec engine when installing the new belt.
What do you hear when you turn it over? Does it spin freely?
i dont think its an interference motor i did a timing belt on a 2.0 focus, anyways its pretty straight forward. You do need a flat bar i think 6 mm thick to lock the cams together in the right place and another tool which i cant remember what it was off the top of my head. get a chiltons and good luck
ir rolls over easily and freely sounds like no compresion. either the belt broke or the tensioner broke. i didnt take the cover off yet as it had rained ever since but if u pry it back yo can touch the belt and see its loose as ever ill try to tear it apart this weekend. any ideas where to get the tool to align the pulleys?
thanks
chris
