I got around to installing my coolant filter today that I got from dieselsite.com.
I installed it the way the instructions said, which was tying it into the port on the water pump and the line going from the rad into the reservoir. I looked through some of the pics of coolants filters done by some of you and you guys tied into the heater core lines. Any reason you guys did it that way?
Yes. The heater hose that comes from the pass. side just below the head
(as I recall) is a pressure line. Tap into that for your "IN" port of the filter.
The heater line going to the top of the water pump is the return line, Tap into that for the "OUT" from your filter.

Sure I remember, it was a dark and stormy night but I was always taught to respect my ELDERS right or wrong!!
I doubled checked the directions for the filter installation. I have it installed exactly the way it shows. I removed the hose from the filter head on the in side. This is the hose coming from the water pump port, where you would put a temp sender. Coolant does flow from this hose when the truck is running.
What would be the advantage of moving the lines to the way you are describing? Do those lines get more pressure? Would the filter in that location restrict flow to the heater core? Also, I have a shutoff valve in the heater core supply line that shuts off flow to the core when the ac is on max. If I use the return hose coming from the core as my filter return would this allow coolant into the core when that valve is closed?
Who am I to say what is right or wrong? TJ and I had this very same discussion almost a year ago and his filter is hooked up simular to yours. H e did tell me that he didn't think that the filter was worth the time or money as it never trapped anything.
Look at the diagrams that is on the site and you be the judge. My trucks cooling system is like the bottom diagram, (I think) the one that has the extra hose going to the bottom of the tank.

One thing I dont like about this setup is it takes up the temp port. The head I got has a tapping on it for the temp sender but im not getting accurate readings from it. Doesnt seem to get as hot there as it did on the water pump port. I may change the supply hose for that reason.
I don't understand. Did you remove your temp gauge and put a hose barb in its place thusley eliminating your temp gauge? This should not happen. Step back and take a deep breath. Your whole setup should contain two (2) "T" fittings for tapping into your heater hoses or as your kit says one to go to the overflow tank.
Remember, water takes the path of least resistance. According to you you have your system tapped into two (2) return lines so you are bound to get some fluid frow it just won't have the pressure pushing the coolant thru the filter.
Assuming that you want to keep your system the way you have it,,,is there not a plug on your water pump on the drivers side? If not I would suggest that you put your temp sensor back where it was and tap into the heater hose coming from the pass. side below the head. That will be pressure water. Now...you mentioned that you have a shut off valve to eliminate the heater during the summer. I don't know where you put that but it should be on the same line that I mentioned above. The valve would be between the heater and the "T" to your filter.
Rog, Im sorry I should have been more specific when I said temp sender. I should I said aftermarket temp sender. I had to remove that one, on the drivers side of the water pump and install a barbed fitting in its place for the supply line.
Steve, I don't know what to tell ya. The diagram on the web site that I provided is what I used and I also have a after market temp gauge installed in my truck installed on the drivers side of the water pump.
You may want to reconsider the installation of your filter or you may just want to leave it as it is. It's a shame that you should lose the after market temp gauge.
I will add this, after I have run my truck for a short period of time you can not place your hand on the coolant filter as it is approx 200*.
This has nothing to do with your question/problem but.. I also have a filter opener similar to a large tubing cutter that I will be using to open my filter in another 4 months to obs exactly what has been living in my cooling system. I'll post the results.
Steve, I wish you luck with yours and I hope that you find a way to re-install your temp gauge. As an after thought I think that TJ has photos of how my system is hooked up labled Shroud Mod.
