PS Hose

This is a heads up...

Driving my 2000 F250 this am - I lost PS assist & brake booster due to a worn through PS line. Looks like it had been rubbing for quite a while. You bet I'll be checking our 03 when I get home tonight - wish I'd drove the 08 to work this morning!

Check yours - I had a hose rubbing where the steering shaft (from the column/steering wheel) passes by the back of the PS pump. I didn't lose all of the fluid but I'll bet I lost 75% of it. Sprayed !^#$%&#$!%&$#% PS fluid all over the fenderwell, shock, brake caliper & wheel. What a MESS!!!

I wrapped the replacement hose in Nylon spiral wrap to protect it. If you drive on rough roads or off road quite a bit this is a definate must check item.

Thanks for the "heads Up" DG. Going to check it today and buy a length of split plastic loom to cover it.

I know you are probably calling it PS fluid because of it's fuction but to clarify it is ATF fluid.

Edit: Since this is about PS here is a good write up on PS System Flush

Mine's not touching, and shows no signs of wear, but DAMN, that's WAAAAAYYYYY too close for comfort!

Mine will be getting some protection, too!

Thanks for the head's up on this.

I posted about a similar problem in this thread:

What i did was, get some heater hose cut it about 4 inches long and slice it in the middle, just slip it on,wala. Then checked all other hoses and did the same with other size rubber hose.

Hose

Apparently something in the length/routing of this hose varies from truck to truck - on our 03 F350 it was close but not rubbing. Ended up protecting it anyway just to be safe.

On the 00 it looked like it had been rubbing for some time as the steering column shaft was shiny/burnished in the area that was rubbbing. Amazing how it sprayed out of there @ 60mph - I have fluid all underneath too. Time for a good underbody wash.
