Hey guys. I have a 2000 f350 4x4 and while we were out feeding this evening she cut off. She was low on fuel and i think somethings wrong with the fuel pump and/or pickup cuz sometimes it will run out of fuel before its actually out. Anywho we thought no big deal, put 5 gallons of fuel in it and she still wouldnt start. Then i watch the tach and it wont do anything while turning over and i got under the truck and listened for the fuel pump while my brother turned the key to the ON position. Nothing, and you can put your hand on the pump and you cant feel anything. When the CPS tell the engine to not take fuel does it cut the fuel pump off or no?
No the CPS won't turn off the fuel pump. Running out of fuel is not good on your injectors, and even the 5 gallons you added isn't really much fuel in the bottom of a large tank. The way the fuel pick up inlet is designed it will get a bunch of air in the line when the tank gets too low.
The first thing to check are fuses. Have you checked the fuel filter bowl to see if ti's full or empty? If you sucked something up on the pick up screen you can take the line off the back of the fuel pump and give it a shot of compressed air.
The fuel pump should run for 20 - 30 seconds when the key is turned on. There's a possibility it just lost it's prime and is unable to pull the fuel. Make sure you don't feel anything when touching the pump before you condemn it. You could check the wires with a multi-meter. If the wires have power and the pump isn't running then you've found your problem. You'll need a fuel line disconnect tool to get the pump out.
Thanks. I'll take a look at it tomorrow when its light out. I really appreciate it. My brothers a tractor mechanic so he should have a good idea about it. Thanks
a couple months back.....I ran out of fuel in my truck. I'm not sure if it was purely coincedence or not......but I lost my CPS and fuel pump when trying to re-start the truck. Took me quite awhile of cranking and priming to do it. I pulled codes when it ran like crap and it gave me the CPS code, don't have the number in front of me, but I replaced it with the new gray one, and the truck STILL wouldn't start. It turned out to be the fuel pump also.....not a cheap thing to replace!
Piece of cake! This morning when I tried to start it I noticed I had no "wait to start" light. I knew right away what it was cuz this happened to my 96 years back. Pulled the fuel filter and was full of fuel. Drained the cannister and there she was a broken Fuel heater. Started checking fuses and found a mini 30 fuse blown, replaced it and she fired right up.......sweet!
