I've been reading the archives regarding CPS issues all summer since my truck was intermittently cutting out described before as "turning the key off & on quickly"; usually once during an engine run cycle and either in 60 or 80 HP which is what I normally drive in.
My oil is fresh as are the two fuel filters I have installed (stock and Dahl 30 micron pre-pump).
After speaking with Jody, I removed and checked my tuner connections and they looked good. In October, I decided to drive to Dillsburg PA to have Jody look at my set up while he was live tuning (I switched from the live-tuned F5 to his new F6 ). He reloaded my chip settings and thought my connections looked good as well.
The truck drove great to Pittsburgh/Dillsburg and back home near St Louis, and has done so until last night.
On the way home from our favorite hamburger stand, the truck made a noticeable cutout one time, and ran fine the rest of the way home. NO SES light has ever been set for this symptom. I DON"T BELIEVE this has anything to do with my DP Tuner! I don't have an AE so I'm thinking about having my local Ford Dealership (great diesel mechanic there, he's a truck puller) run for codes and do the Cruise control recall.
I'm just concerned about getting the new grey CPS because other than this cutout thing, my truck runs super strong.
Based on comments from the forum around 03' I picked up a IH black CPS and it's in the console box.
I know it's one of my options.....it's hard for me to climb in, around and under the truck anymore. Some service related injuries have caught up with me. Kind of like "the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak". I appreciate the input!
I just checked the RHN and we only have two members on there from Il. The closest is Nic Hill (nhill2090) BUT he is in East Peoria Il. Which looks to be a couple hours north of you.
Sorry I couldnt be much help... I will through him a pm and see if maybe he knows a 7.3er closer to you...
Subscribing.....
My truck is having the same symtoms though one day when looking at a canopy about 75 miles away from home it cut out on me.
I was pulling away after looking at the canopy, was accelerating (not hard) and it just died. I managed to pull it into a parking lot and it started back up as if nothing happen.
So, I think our two symtoms are related though I haven't had any problem since and no codes came of it. If I figure out anything I'll let you know and visa versa though I haven't been working on my truck much lately, just working, ya know?
Maybe this weekend I can dig into her some........ Anyhow, back to the topic at hand.
Any thoughts?
Oh, and I have a black CPS so his could be a CPS but I don't think mine is. Maybe a loose wire some where, who knows but give a CPS a shot (You should have a spare anyhow) and let us know.
Thanks for the great offer! I think I'll be able to tackle swapping out the CPS. I just had my local dealership complete the cruise control deactivation switch recall and run codes for me. No codes.....Dave who's the shop diesel expert says to swap out my CPS. That's what I'm going to do.
Thanks for all the suggestions and offer of help! V/r Les
Keep us posted as I am quite interested in the results of this post.
Sorry this has taken so long, we were hit with a series of family medical emergencies and the loss of my beloved mother-in-law Doris over the past few months.
After thinking about the responses and talking with Brian from BTS, I had the local Ford pull the codes for me ($50.00, not bad IMHO). The tech showed me a Code P0344 for Intermittent CPS. You guys & Brian were RIGHT ON!
Lucky for me I bought a new black CPS back in 2003, so I'll install it and move on. THANKS AGAIN FTE!
P.S. I forgot to mention the very latest time we drove the truck it DID set the Check Engine Light (it flickered, then stayed on throughout the driving cycle). The light went out upon restarting vehicle. Brian rightly assumed there would be codes if the batteries weren't disconnected.
