Hello Ford Friends. My sister has a 2000 Explorer, 6 cylinder and I can not get it started. She had been driving it around OK and then one morning it will not start. Cranks great, battery and starter good. It seems not to be getting any gas at all. I was going to change out the fuel filter and found out that I need a special 'tool' (thanks for letting me know). I thought that I should check on the fuel pump side and fuse. Which fuse is the fuel pump fuse? any other suggestions would be very helpful. I plugged a OBD scanner into it and it says 'lean'...I'll say lean..how about no fuel. I sprayed some starter fluid into the intake. kicked over and shot a little flame out...I said that was enough of that...
Probably the fuel pump relay. It's located under the hood in a black box. Lift off the cover and there will be a list under the lid telling you witch relay controls what. Should be 3 or 4 of them. Try swapping out the fuel pump relay with one for the power windows. If it starts, go buy a new relay, about ten bucks.
Could also be the inertia switch. Not positive where it is on yours, but they are normally found inside the truck, passenger side, under the carpet on the firewall near the tranny hump. Push the button on top of the switch to reset. Also make sure the wires going into the bottom of the switch are seated properly.
The inertia switch, by the owners book is on the Passenger side inside the right foot wall. I pulled back the plastic cover and there was a type of box that did not look like the picture in the book. I could not find a button to push on that thing for the life of me. I will look again and also try switching out the fuses. The relay box is just numbered, but I can match them up with the owners book. Can the relays be tested with a volt meter?
That box in that location is usually the ECM(the computer that controls your engine). Check under the carpeting.
Don't know if you can check the relay with the meter but swapping it out with one that you know works is the easiest way to check. Just don't swap out the one for the ECM.
if it fired when you shot some starter fluid in the intake, it would be fuel related - how did you check to see that there is no fuel? sounds like it's either a bad fuel pump or relay. normally a dirty filter would fail gradually, but I guess I'd replace that too, just as PM if it's never been done.
When you turn the key to the ON position, you should hear the fuel pump prime for a second or 2. If not, then your problem is fuel delivery related. As already discussed, check the FP relay and any FP related fuses. When checking the inertia switch, make sure that the wire is connected firmly at the bottom. You can also try hitting the gas tank with a rubber mallet to see if that makes a difference. Sometimes you can jar the FP a bit to get it started. If that is the case, then you probably need to replace the FP.
its easy to get to the plug for the fuel pump. just get under the truck with a multimeter and check to see if you are getting power. if you are not getting power then start looking at the relay and inertia switch, and wiring. if you are getting power then i would check to make sure you hear the pump. then make sure there is gas in it. my wifes gauge went bad so she ran out of gas. then fuel pump
