400 identification
I recently got hold of a 74 ford truck. great truck, but here's my problems:
the motor isnt original, the guy who sold it to me said he got it from a 70 merc, went to autozone for tune up parts, and they are saying that there wasnt a 70 400 anything. I know that autozone isnt the end all be all authority on what vehicles had what engines, but it kinda makes me nervous. how do I identify the motor for sure?
and my next question is with a 'stock'? 2bbl what is the best upgrade to a 400 that is I presume stock?
any help will be greatly appreciated, I am anxious to find out so I can get rolling on this beast in the making.

I would guess that it's not a 400, it's probably an FE of some sort, 360 or 390 would be the best bet. Does the intake minifold extend underneath the valve covers? If so it's an FE not a 335 series.
As far as mods to the 400, you can start with recurving the ignition timing and putting a 4V & headers on it. You need a hotter cam and increased comp. ratio to really wake it up.

Hmm...OK well then it could be a 335. I don't have any casting #s for intakes but underneath the right hand bank of cylinders is the casting # for the block. It'll be a D1, D3 or D5 # if it's a 351M or 400.

firecapt30,
The D2 casting number indicates a part that was designed for a 1972 vehicle. It wouldn't be original in a 1970 vehicle.
I've never seen a D2 casting number on any 400 parts. Look closer at the casting number. The third character is always a letter.
Some 351C 2V engine parts had D2 casting numbers. If it's D2AE, it's a 351C engine. If it's D2VE, then the engine is either a 429 or 460.
You can also count the number of valve cover bolts. The 429/460 have 7 bolts, the 351C and 400 have 8 bolts, and the 289/302/351W have 6 bolts.

the casting number on the intake is not D28, its a D2SE3425A A
there are also 8 bolts on the valve covers.
so if I am correct from the info you guys have given me so far....I am looking at either a cleveland or 400m based on the bolts in the valve covers. the D2S part is still a mystery though.
any further knowledge out there?
thanks again you guys are great

Casting # on the block will tell you for sure. BTW I was looking at the wrong # in my last post. D0A or D2A will be a Cleveland block. D1A, D3A, D4A, D5A, D7T or D8 will be a 351M or 400.

on the very front of the block on the right side down real low it says "1G12A" thats stamped in.
I removed the heat shield to get to the underside of the cylinders and that was all I could see under there. actually spun one of the bolts off doing it heh
the exhaust manifolds have "D1OE" on em as well
the thermostat housing comes straight out of the block as well, another board said this might also help id it.
these dont sound like the number/letter codes mentioned before. am I looking in the right place?
thanks
