Motor build ideas for a 400 with 351C 4V heades

I have a 78 351M that I'm going to rebuilding if I can make it squeeze into my 87 Ford Ranger. I found a set of 70 351C 4V heads with matching intake and Valve covers for $500 Canadian that I may snap up if the swap looks like it will work

I want a motor with some pull up to 6000rpm and the truck will be around 3000lbs so I can get away with less torque

-400 crank and pistons............unsure of what I would need for pistons
-351C heads with a 3 angle grind and rebuild
-Comp Cam 274 extreme energy
-I have an edlebrock perfomer 400 intake or the stock 351C
-I have 351M headers from a truck and 351C 70 mustang headers

Anyone have any input or ideas on problems I will hit with this build

which heads are they , open or closed chamber?

for pistons you need to call Tim Meyer, but you'll need to know open or closed chamber heads to get the compression ratio you want to work with the cam.

the stock 4V C manifold will be better than a performer, but to see 6000rpm you'll need something more. think Blue Thunder for a dual plane, or there are a few single planes you could use. edelbrock torker, offy port-o-sonic are a couple of the more economical ones.

you might be able to make a set of headers out of the 2 sets you have, you'll need the 4V flanges from the mustang headers on the truck pipes.

good heads imo- not sure bout the price. I own a '72 torino with the 351 4v cj...a bit neutered compared to the 70. I might rebuild it if i keep the car- and make it my 1/4 mile project- along with a '75 stangII. but really the idea I think is balancing the static compression with cam ie build compression and then get a more aggressive cam with a ivc that lessens the dynamic compression to the point that pump gas can be used...then I think you pretty much have a cam that will also take advantage of the 4v heads in the higher rpm and make impressive power.

Thats my theory and i was planning to put that out to be scutinized when i saw your post...good timing.

I have the same setup. Bad Azz! First thing you are going to need is the adapter kit from Price Motorsports or you can order it from Flatlander Racing. The reason is that the m block is taller than the cleveland block and the heads will be spaced out wider. This kit allows you to use 4v cleveland heads, m block and 4v cleveland intake. The water passage ways on the cleveland heads are the same as m block so no machining is required. Just bolt and go baby! This is my setup. new 400 crank, stock rods, bush the rods, new rod bolts, keith black 10.5:1 flat top hypereutectic pistons and ring, use m block head gaskets, bored 30 over, M BLOCK PUSHRODS (very important to remember that) Crane Energizer Cam (284 dur. 554"lift) Cran rockers (not roller) you can use roller but it's not necessary, new double valve springs, 3 angle valve job, if it is going into a 4x4 just use m block headers they bolt right up, bolt pattern, spacing is all the same on the headers, you will need to sets of intake gaskets, (intake to adapter plate and plate to head) Holly 770 street avenger double pumper carb, These heads need a lot of fuel. Remember, these babies (heads) flow more than the 460 c.j. A lot of stuff is interchangable so do some researching before buying anything. I'm anywhere between 475-500 hp and 7000. these heads are built for that. they really don't start trying till 4000. Good luck and post me back with any questions.
