I've got a '77 F-150 351M that has starting problems. Sometimes she starts right up and other times just turns over and over and over. After playing around, I discovered that she will fire up when you release the key. In other words, I turn the key and the engine turns over but won't start. As soon as I let the key go back to the left it fires over. Someone told me this was a "ford problem." I'm gonna get a starter soleniod and ign switch. Any experience with this?
Does your solonoid have two small posts, if it does make sure the post with the I has a good connection to the wire. Also make sure the wire is in good shape. If the solonoid only has one small post then you're looking at a new switch in the dash. Check for voltage like these guys have said here also. I have had to wire up a push button start switch more than once and not only in fords - one was a saab
It sounds like a power to the coil problem to me. I had this problem when I dropped my 351M into my '72. It turned out that I hadn't made an allance to fire the coil in the start position. I was able to overcome it with a relay but it wasn't until after I was done and had it running that I realized I could have done the same thing with a different solenoid.
