Our companies accountants son went to work for Jiffy Lube. The only thing he knew about cars was where to put the gas in. They gave him a whole 3 hour training class which consisted of them showing him how to remove the drain plug and how to unscrew an oil filter and how to put them back in. In his first week there he drained 2 transmissions by removing the wrong plug. They knew he drained the tranny when they went to refill the oil and it was already full on the dipstick! He got fired on his third week there when he forgot to refill a car with oil and it locked up just a couple of miles from the store.
These are the kind of stories I was talking about coming from the store in our area, and I remember its name now, its a "Valvoline Instant Oil Change"

Makes me wonder if this was the same kid that about 20 something years ago did the same thing to my Jeep. About 1/2 mile from the place heard it rapping. Shut her down checked the oil empty, and no drain plug, wouldn't start again. It took me 2 months and a lawyer for them to pay. Did manage to get a brand new engine for it, and not a junk yard special.
I do not use Jiffy Lube but I do patronize a mom & pop owned oil change place here in town. Same kid changes my oil every time and I get to watch and talk to him every time. Why don't I do it myself? Because it's a hassle and it's easier for them to do it. I don't have to dispose of the filter (I always supply my own) or the oil. Do I trust them? Absolutely. I'm right there with them and this kid has never done anything out of whack. He won't be working there much longer as he's way smarter than a neck up oil monkey.
I had a friend of mine call me about he truck running extremely bad after he got the oil changed. He asked me what could they have done to it. Well come to find out, he got 10qts of oil instead of only 5qts. When I first got my PSD, I had a mechanic only put 12qts of oil in and he closed the hood. Luckily I was watching his every move. I politely asked hime what the hell he was doing. You should have seen the look on his face.
I had the diff oil changed in my truck at a Jiffy Lube once, and when I asked them about the 4oz of additive they put in, the guy gave me a dumb look...uughhhh- I always keep a Chiltons in the truck, so I broke it out and showed it to him. They actually had the stuff, and he knew where to find it, he just didn't know why the store kept it aorund, they never used it before ?!?!?!?!!!!!
I bought my truck from a Lithia dealership that offered a lifetime oil change plan for $700... you betcha I snatched that up. The dealership I go to now can't fit it on a rack (VW shop) so the guy has to crawl underneath...right where I can see him the entire time.
P.S. you should have heard him whining "I'll have to lay on the ground to do that job!!" Dude, you chose that line of work - what did you expect???
With any shop, get to know them, let them know you know your vehicle well, and won't/can't be BS'd, and that Scott (I'd burn the store down) taught you how to deal with cheaters!!! LOL
I see that they check off services they don't perform myself. However, here is a thought. What if (not saying I would do it) but IF, I knew my motor was about to go, I went to Jiffy Lube, got them to fill up and 2 miles down the road, my sleazy friend would unscrew the plug and drain the oil.
Besides that this is a Powerstroke and will stop if the oil runs out, can I have a case if it were on another car?
I have never had oil changed by anyone...it will be the last thing I have to give up on my vehicle due to age...I hope I die at 90 changing the oil on one of my vehicles! BTW, what does Jiffy-Lube (or similar places) charge to change the oil on our trucks (15-40 dino)?
Last thing in the world i'd do is let some 16-year-old kid touch my truck.
Nope..I'll change it myself thanks. There are only a handfull of people I'd let drive my truck, much less mess around under the hood.
Besides it gives me a chance to take a better look at the truck, check for leaks, uneven belt wear, fluid levels, corroded electrical connections, etc.
