Adding a magnet into the oil filter element.

I seen it advertised in Midas, and seems like a good idea to have some sort of metal trapping device in addition to filter element.
Kinda like they have a magent on the bottom of the transmission Pan.
What do youthink?

i dont see what it would hurt, get a really big one or one of those ones that wraps around the whole filter

If you want to see if it makes a diff send a sample of your oil to Blackstone labs before and after you put the magnet on.

I use two hard drive magnets. Never cut the filter open to see if it helps. Once thing that some talk against using magnets is what if a large clump of metal fuzz comes off the magnet area then you have a glut of stuff floating around.

I don't know. I can't see it hurting anything but it also won't match bypass filtration but it will be cheaper and easier.

I purchased some rare earth magnets, about the diameter of a dime and 1/4" thick, really strong mags, got them at a tool store. Have them on my 2 fuel filters, both oil filters and oil drain plug. Improved my mileage by 10%...heh heh....No really....

Correct me if I'm wrong, (and I know ya will) but the engine oil goes thru a full flow filter and is under pressure. The tranny filter is a bypass filter, the oil is under pressure but all of it does not have to go thru the filter.

I have a filter opener. It is nothing but a huge tubing cutter but the advantage is you don't deposit foreign particals in to the filter as you would using a hack saw or disturb what might be clinging to the paper filter as the two are seperated by the rip & tear method.

So far I have found nothing of interest inside of any on my filters...and believe me....I have looked those pleats over.

I did it to increase mileage due to re-aligned molecular structure of fluids, I know it runs way smoother now and my joints don't hurt on long trips either.....

As far as I know you are correct Kawa, and I like the idea of a filter opener....hmmm have a large pipe cutter and will try that next time. I have looked at my coolant filter when I first installed (after a month) and it had all sorts of scale and what looked like sand trapped but is clean now....reminds me should put a mag on that too. I remember a number of years back looking at my oil drain plug, seeing very fine metalic particles on it as it is maged too. So when I found some rare earth magnets as mentioned above bought and installed.

Seriously though.....think it couldn't hurt in picking up any metal keerap and the mags are inexpensive.....

JCART: Your coolant filter is doing it's job. That grit you mentioned is just the sort of thing that works on water pump seals as well as constant grinding away on hoses, radiator and heater cores and anything else it may touch.

I really believe in coolant filtration, especially when you open one up and see the crap that has been trapped.

I also added a "Coolant Eye" to my filtration system. I got it at John Deere. Its clear plastic "Y" fitting with a petcock at the bottom of the "Y" It is positioned in such a fashion as to create as swirl as the coolant pass through the eye and deposits will fall to the bottom (I theory)
