Who's Running Pertronix Ignition?

And if you are, are you running Pertronix I or II?

Yes I did, but I was trying to get people to speak about their experiences with the products. The other thread is just about FitchBanjos installation, which is fine; in fact, that's what caused me to create this query.

I am running the pertronix I. I believe it is the First one because I am not running a flame thrower coil. I did not install it myself. It was on the truck when I bought it two years ago, and I have not had one problem with it at all. Mine is a daily driver, and gets a good work out. Hope that helps.

I run an Ignitor-I in my F100 w/ 262 6cyl. I use an extra ohm of ballast resistance with the stock coil to help it live longer.

I may add an MSD module to minimize the current that the Pertronix unit has to sink.

can you run a pertronixs electronic ignition with a msd blaster 2 coil? i was told something about a resistor being put on too. i figured if i had to put a resistior on it, it wouldn't be doing its full job. electrical isn't my strong point.

The original Ignitor, sometimes referred to as the Ignitor-I, has a current limit of about 1 Amp/cylinder, so a 12V V-8 application requires a minimum of 1.5-ohms, and a 12V 6-cyl requires at least 2-ohms. I tried to stay away from the minimum recommendations, and added ballast resistance until I achieved a total of 3-ohms for my 6-cyl.

You're correct about the extra resistance reducing the peak output of the coil. If I'd used less ballast resistance, I could have set the plug gaps wider, but the truck is in a good state of tune so its ignition requirements are minimal. A .035" plug gap is working just fine for me.

The Ignitor-II might be able to drive an MSD Blaster coil without any extra ballast resistance. I think they can handle coils with a primary winding resistance as low as 0.45 ohms.

Most people have good luck with the Ignitor I & II, but their reputations aren't entirely spotless. Anything you can do to reduce the current in the Ignitor should help it live longer.

That's why I'd really recommend using something like an MSD-6A between the Ignitor and a Blaster coil. The "conventional trigger" input to an MSD-6A has an input resistance of 40-ohms, so at 12V, the Ignitor would only be required to sink 12V/40-Ohms = 0.35 Amps.

In running an Ignitor 1 in 2 of my cars I play it safe by sticking with the original coil. The other two cars, with the Ignitor 2, use one of the Pertronix coils and have the resistor wire from the ignition by passed as per the instructions.
