Black smoke

Got black smoke out the tail pipe while driving. 79 351m 2barrel. Carburetor needs adjusting?? What you guys recommend doing. Truck seems to run fine. A litty ##### about starting. I'm capable of rebuilding carbs just never messed with an autolite (is that what it is). What's good in aftermarket carbs. Going for fuel mileage not more power.

The autolite 2100 and 2150 2bbls are about the easiest carburetors to rebuild and are very easy to adjust. I think it cost me 20 bucks to do mine. Mine feeds my 390 more than adaquately for the stock cam it has. You can actually get more mileage out of a small 4bbl if you can keep your foot out of it. You might just try turning both the idle adjustment screws 1/4 turn counterclockwise. This may solve your problem.
