400 tune up blues

400 tune up blues

my truck is blowing black smoke out of the exhaust. I replaced the plugs, cap and rotor. It has a new carb. motor is a 351m converted to a 400, 4barrel holley 600 What is the correct timing for this. Help

well,

timing is not your problem thats for sure. you have a serious fuel issue a very bad one. how did you tunr the new holley?

I just got the new carb, haven't did any adjusting to it... what do you suggest
said it was flow test and pre-adjusted

holley should have given you a check list of stuff to do to it before even mounting it. you will need to adjust mixture screws,choke, and install a power valve to work with your enigne. take the vacuum of the engine divide by 2 and use a power valve with the same number.

I guess I will need to get a vacuum gauge. The instuctions said adjustment are preset at the factory and should not need any adjusting, but it does explain how to adjust if needed... Looks like I will give it a try

The first thing I would check once you verify that the choke is opening is the float level. Look down the throttle bores at an idle and see if gas is dripping into them from the venturis. If so, then one of the floats is too high or has a piece of debris in the needle and seat.
