I have an '04 Expy and like all others it has 4 wheel disc brakes. I recently did a four wheel brake job and was somewhat taken back by the fastening mechanisms. I've never seen this type of fastener before, I was able to properly do the brake job, however, is there a special tool for this application? I couldn't find one at the parts store, I didn't go to a Ford dealer for the new pads.
I'm not sure how different yours is compared with my '98. All I use is a C-clamp and a 3/8" drive T45 Torx bit for the front. It's been too long since I've done the rear brakes.

I also had to use a T-45 for the inside of the caliper but there is a wierd clip device that clips on the outside as well.
I know the clips you are talking about and there is no tool that I am aware of. I have done the front brakes twice and the back brakes once. On my 2004 Exp I used a stout screw driver as a lever and a hard rubber mallet to pry off & pop the caliper clamps back on. There is a lot of tension and at first I bent them a little out of shape and had to bend them back. After the second time I did the brakes, I noticed that the clamps had lost their original perfect shape so I decided to replace them. Not wanting to pay inflated prices at a Ford dealership, I looked at several different auto parts chains. The only one that had the clamps was O'Reilly's and a pair for the fronts came in a kit for around $37. I didn't need the other parts in the kit but I kept everything in the original box for future reference. This is my (wife's) first SUV and it's the first time I've seen this type of clamp used to put tension against calipers. The kit also came with two of the little spring clips that hold the pads to the calipers.

Thanks Charlie, I used the same exact technique, what a pain. I bent mine a little as well and I'll be replacing them next time. I refuse to pay Ford's price too.
