Guys we have to be careful with statements like 'all 351Ms' or the 351M 'never' came with whatever bolt pattern. The 351M started life with the 302/351 small bell pattern on the back. My 76 torino had a 351M with an FMX automatic tranny,. I found the small pattern when the engine was pulled because of a cracked block- apparently this was a common problem with the early Ms. A 77 351M replacement would not fit, it had the far more common big bell pattern. After some searching we found a 1975 400 that also had the small bell. I believe the frequent cracks were part of the reason that Ford changed the bell pattern on these engines. How many were produced with the small bell I do not know, if I had not seen it myself I would not have believed it, but there are a few of them out there. DF
LAST EDITED ON 18-Jun-01 AT 11:27 PM (EST)[p]Both engines you had were 400 blocks cast in 1973. You may have had a 351M in your vehicle but it started life as a 400. So as I said before, 351Ms and 351Ws never had the same bellhousing bolt pattern.
Since we're on the topic of bolt patterns, I have this question from my son. Will a C-6 Bolt up to a 351m that has a fmx behind it? He wants to know before he drops it and finds he may have screwed up.

If it's a 351M then it has the big block bolt pattern so any C6 which fit on the 351M/400 or 429/460 will fit.
