Hey all,
My 66 has a "thunk, thunk" noise when I take off from a stop. I've replaced the king pins and wheel bearings. Shock mounts and coil spring perches look good.
What's next??
Thanks,
Judi
sounds like radius arm bushings...they are the big arms going rearward from the front spring area and attach in the area about under your feet when in the truck.
btw, bushings should be around 3/4 inch thick or so...but as bad as your noise sounds, if it is a bushing, it sounds as if one or two would be all but gone. If so, they are easily obtained and are cheap
LOL, you guys ALWAYS come up with the best info. The tire rod ends are in good shape so I'll chase the bushings.
Thanks!
Judi
I'm bettin' on the radius rod bushings, too.
There are two sizes on each arm, plus a large washer.
Ford (updated) part numbers:
2) D5TZ-3B203-D .. Rear (replaces C5TZ-3B203-B)
2) D5TZ-3B203-E .. Front (replaces C5TZ-3B203-C)
Before spending the green, try tightning up the nut on each arm. Some past owner may have not snugged the nut down and it has worked loose...that's rather common.
I used to hear a pretty audible "thunk" coming from the truck when I took it around turns.
It turned out being the leaf spring bushings, which were COMPLETELY shot. Once I replaced them, the truck felt smoother and tighter. It helped it track down the road straighter as well.
ND- the back bushing is pretty obvious, but where is that front one located? Is it the bolt that goes up through my coil spring? (LOL, Guess that question explains to Matt that I don't have front leaf springs... )
ND- the back bushing is pretty obvious, but where is that front one located? ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE SUPPORT BRACKET THAT HOLDS THE RADIUS ARM TO THE FRAMEIs it the bolt that goes up through my coil spring? (LOL, Guess that question explains to Matt that I don't have front leaf springs... )
Sequence of assembly.
