Excessive Rattling/Vibration

I realize that my truck is nearly half a century old, but I still feel that the cab shakes/vibrates excessively. Should I replace the cab mounts? How do I tell if they're worn out? Or might it be the motor mounts?

Thanks guys.

EDIT: Its fine in 1st and 2nd gear, but once I get up there in 3rd, it gets pretty bad.

I thought I had a bent drive line when I had the same problem. But then I found rubber bushing in the carrier bearing was bad.

Yeah that's the other thing I thought of too, that maybe I had a bent driveshaft or whatever.

Maybe its one of the universal joints?

More than likely it is the center carrier bearing. Easy to check. Just grab the drive shaft near the bearing and try to move it up and down.

I'm sorry, but is the "carrier bearing" a part of the differential?

You have a 2-piece drive shaft and ,where the 2 halves join, there is a bracket mounted to the underside of the frame that contains a bearing suspended in a rubber bushing. That is your carrier bearing. very easy to get and to change.

No, I have a single driveshaft. I guess that's why I didn't know what you were talking about.

OK then disregard my reply. Maybe you have bent wheel or bad tire?

Matt does it vibrate at the same speed every time. That would indicate a drive train or a wheel balance problem. Jack up the rear tires put it on jackstands and have a helper run it at the vibration speed. If it doesn't vibrate then it's most likely a front wheel out of balance. If it does, see if it is a tire shaking or the driveshaft shaking. Check for bent wheels, abnormal tire conditions(not round), loose Ujoints, bent drive shaft, play in tailshaft or pinion bearings.

Yeah, it vibrates at about the same speed. It doesn't just randomly began shaking, if that's what you are saying.

It could be a bent wheel, but I'm suspecting a universal joint... I will try your suggestion of blocking up the wheels and reduplicate the gear and speed at which I feel the vibration.

Thanks guys.

with the rear end in the air and on stands run the truck, but before you 'go driving'; hold the foot on the brake and put it in reverse and forward a few times...a bad U-Joint is a huge clunking sound usually...It can also sound as if its sqeaking/squealing in early stages.
If after this its not clunking run it with a helper inside and I would go and look at the drivetrain in motion...a bent driveshaft will be pretty obvious if its the case...if it has a dent in it thats a shaft in need of replacement.
Let us know how things turn out.

That's great advice, cs65. Funny you mention clunking and squealing, because sometimes when I really give it gas and drop the clutch hard, I do hear a pretty go clunk come from near the differential, which I suspect would be the u-joint.

I'll keep you guys updated on the issue, after I run it up on stands to diagnose everything.

Let's hope the truck doesn't fall off the stands while we're spinning the crap out of it!

Do a hand shakedown on the jackstands before running it up to speed. That means put it on the stands then crawl under with the trans in neatral and wiggle, shake, and rotate, anything the moves while driving. You'll probably find it before ever starting it.

Well the rear universal joint does have a bit of play in it.

HOLY CRAP

All I did was replace the universal joint and ALL of my problems went away. A $10 u-joint fixed all the rattling, vibrating, shaking, and banging noises. The clunking noise also ceased.

I took the truck up to 60 mph and it was beautiful!! When I disengaged the clutch, I swear everything shut off, I was just coasting super smoothly, no sounds and vibrations, besides the tires rolling along the road.

Awesome!
