I have a 2001 f250 with a 7.3 and 69k miles. Every so often when i step on the breaks i get a thunk sound. My friend felt it on the passanger side but i can also feel it on the drivers side. We pulled off the tire and the front caliper seemed a little loose but the bolts were tight. Have any of you guys had the same sound and could the caliper be the problem.
Radius arm bushings going bad?Or are they bushingless torsion bars now days?I know it's highly unlikely but might as well stick a jack under the tranny and engine mounts...just to make sure they're not broke.....Luck
The Caliper was the only thing that seemed loose. The tranny and moter mounts are all good. The Drive shft sling seemed loose also. I dont know if it is normal or not but you can move the drive saft a good amount in that sling
Whoa.... just a side comment here on your sig nzirbel... is that even legal to pull a 5th and a boat?
Very legal...In most states. there are different laws but it is legal alot of places. Here in Colorado I see that all the time. There are just a few details that have to be checked beore you do it...such as max length, width etc. I believe in Colorado it is 65ft long 8.5ft wide and 14ft high. I don't have as long a trailer, but I will pull my 28ft gooseneck horse trailer and attach my popup camper to that.

Check the slip joint, (Splines) on the driveshaft. They are very prone to dry out and make a "clunk" when you stop and start. Just need to remove the rubber boot and add more grease.
Absoutely. I can be a maximum of 70' from the front bumper of my truck to the back of my last trailer. I'm sitting at 64'6". It will be closer when I get my bigger boat this year I hope.

Yea well send your boat over here when you get your new one.....I think I could use a newer one. Granted it isn't much of an upgrade...but still.....
Check to see if your hubs are not unlocked completely. Check the front axle shafts for binding....make sure your t-case is completely disengaged. Raise a wheel off the ground and have someone cracnk the whell back and forth. see if you can see loose tierod ends, ball joints, bearings.
If it is a soft "chunking" sound...could be you are rubbing the tire.
I had the same problem with a clunk sound under the drivers side area for the past 2 weeks while braking. I finally got around to it on my own yesterday. After making a a u-turn today I noticed a new clunk when the wheel was turned to the extreme. It reminded me of being locked and in 4wd. So - after getting underneath and finding nothing obvious staring at me, it dawned on me to check the hubs, since I had them locked in a couple weeks ago during a snowstorm. Apparently, the driver's side was turned to the lock position, instead of the unlock. My mistake. LOL. Anyway - drove around all day today, and no clunk so far. Hoping the was the problem here too. Might want to take a look at that.
Also check the sway bar links, these have been known to cause the dredded clunk. Also on mine it was the leaf spring bushings. There is no radius arms in 2001 on a 4x4 don't know on the 2wd, what is yours? It could also be the ball joints, I have seen factory type bad with as little as 25k on the clock. Mine were bad by 35k, now with the new Napa GREASABLE ball joints I have around a 105k on the truck with no problems. Hope this helps.
