Many of you know about the thunk noise that are common on these superduty's when put into drive or reverse. It sounds very much like this "Thunk". I can feel it thru the pedal.
It happens when slowing down. Seems to clunk at about 12-10mph.
My buddy recommended I lube up the slip joint... that perhaps it's gotten dry over the last 280k.
and if its not the slip-joint ? Mine is coming from the front, but I cant find it. All bushings are new and so are springs, ball joints, u-joints, seals, etc.
BTW: Dealer sells a silicone based grease that is for slip yoke

Could be tranny but I would guess yoke. Are you on the brakes when it makes the noise? Could be something loose there and just happen to move at the slower mph.
jeff
Have you checked the yoke? I was positive it wasn't until I greased it and it fixed the problem. It sounded like it was coming from the front but wasn't. Check your front hubs if you haven't. Where did you get your new front springs and how much? Mine are starting to sag and probably need replaced.
I bought my springs right from the dealer. I get a nice discount and that actually made them less than the local spring shop. Most of my parts come right from the dealer. This way I know what I am getting and most of it is USA made. Well worth the extra money for a part that I know will last longer than that chinesecrap you get at the big autoparts stores.
Anybody got a pic or a how to on the lube job of a slip joint?
I can sense Robin will be by any minute now with the link you need Andrew, lol, he's the man on the links and he has a good one on this procedure if nobody beats him to it . From all I learned here I say the slip joint also, its a simple fix from what I read..
I am assuming I will just drop the driveshaft and pull the slipjoint out and use my super special grease I got from the Air Force base.. it makes planes not crash.. super amazing stuff..
I have never replaced u-joints so I prob will do that also.. I would assume after 280k it's about time for them to be replaced. Right?
Yep, just mark the shafts with chalk so you put them together the same way, something with the balancing and rehookup. U-joints, I would, while you got it apart. I'll let you know about that tank, after I get these rotors..
BTW, I performed this task and I still have a clunk in my rear (no pun intended) and would love to see it go away.
The only thing I can figure is maybe it's my rear diff as I have a little slop in the line. I can set the e-brake, leave it in neutral and still rock the drive shaft back and forth about half an inch. So with my tid-bit of info I'm subscribing as well.
