Hi Guys,
Lately I've been having problems getting my auto trans shifter out of the Park position. It seems to actuate but is somehow hanging up or maybe not pulling back all of the way. I pulled the lower cover off of the dash under the steering column and managed to barely see it but no clue as to how remove it to see if I could repair it (probably not likely) or if necessary replace it. IF I could just unbolt it I'd simply tie it up out of the way and not worry about it. Anybody else ever had this problem?
I cannot say much more about it than this. It could be steering column side or transmission side. Crawl under the truck and take the shift cable loose at the transmission. It will be on the drivers side and will pop off with no tools needed. Then try shifting the transmission with just the lever underneath, then try the shift lever in the truck. That should isolate where you are looking at problems from. put blocks under the wheels so you dont get run over and remember that the order of the gears is the same as on the dash, park is the first position, 1 click is reverse, etc.
id be willing to bed its your brake sensor. when you stand on the brake, do your brake lights come on? if they dont, you have a problem and it wont unlock the column. mine was doing this, then i wiggled the black box affixed to the brake pedal and it worked again. it wasnt in propper alignment

It's definately on the steering column side. Everything is free at the transmission end. There's a solenoid? located up under the dash that physically locks the gearshift lever in Park so that it can't be moved out of Park without stepping on the brake pedal. All brake lights are working and I could see the release working when I had the lower panel down. Maybe it's out of adjustment? Worn? Anyway what I'm trying to find out is how to access the solenoid to either change, remove, or replace it. Thanks
Before you go after the solenoid, make sure the brake lights work! The lights and solenoid work off of ther same switch. It's common for the switch to fail or the wires to break at the connector. The brake switch is mounted to the brake pedal arm about 8" above the pedal.
If the brake lights are working, you will have to drop the steering column down to get to the solenoid.
You should be able to shift the trans out of Park if you put the key in the OFF position between Lock and Run. (insert the key and move it foreward 1 click)You can then start the truck in Neutral.
After rereading, I see where the brake lights work.
What do you mean in your first post by "It seems to actuate"? Does the shifter move but the trans woun't come out of Park? If so, check the shift tube clamp bolts on the steering column. They work loose and will cause that.
