I got the south bend clutch and kevlar pilot bushing with the fly wheel they sold me. Well i put in a rebuilt trans and it was make a grinding noise when in nutral. So i took the truck up to the shop and they pulled the trans and the pilot bushing had fallen out of the fly wheel and worked its way up the trans. Anyone else have this problem? Im hoping this wont cost me anything sense its not my fault or the trans shop. The bushing was preinstalled by south bend. I tried calling them but its after hours. Hope they stick by there product.
i have one, drove there to get it, i love it. i switched to it because i also had a grinding noise. this is actually the throwoutbearing, the ford manual says throwout bearing noise is commonly misdaignosed as mainshaft bearing noise.
anyways if you hold in the clutch does it go away?
if you look at the throwout bearings for these truck they are el cheapo, and the clutch fork deisgn is junk also.
i though of trying to engineer a spring to pull the throwout bearing of the pressure plate fingers to get rid of the noise, there should be 1/4 inch or so of freeplay on most types ( we make this mod on alot of 02ish cobras ) ( except for what you would see in like a ford ranger with its hydraulic clutch and overrunning bearing.)
and technically it couldnt fall out with the tranny installed. these trannys are very heavy i could see how it could be damaged upon installation or removal. if there was something wrong with it, it should grind while going into first or reverse because the input shaft would be catching and trying to spin.
I just put in a new Valair and it will make a grinding noise in neutral, mash the clutch and it goes away. Thats how most of them do as far as I know the double disk are a little worst. If you go back with a stock you want get the noise.
Something is wrong with that bushing to have it fall out like that.
I have the Kevlar bushing as well, it was so tight that I had to use a big hammer and seal driver to get it installed.
so they put in a normal pilot bearing and still there now there claiming its the fly wheel! Go figure. I can see the throw out bearing making this noise. But it a brand new one from south bend. I got everything new but the fork but never had any noise before!
What a bunch of numbskulls!
The spring hub will make a grinding noise too from the uneven crankshaft speed at idle.
If you ever want to graph the velocity of the crankshaft at idle it will look like a sine wave.
That heavy flywheel isn't there for no reason.
