I finally put my 79 F-150 together. The only way I can start it is by jumping from the hot side of the solenoid to the smaller terminal next to it with a screwdriver. I put a new ignition switch in because I had one laying around but that didn't help. The only other thing I have not tried was the neutral safety switch, but I don't know how to check it. Any ideas?
unplug the saftey switch from the trans and put a peice of wire into the two terminals. if the truck starts, then its the switch if not...you've probably got some wiring in front of you.

Had the same problem with my 80 F-250.Changed starter, voltage regulator, solenoid(three times),Fusable link and could only get it to turn over by jumping the solenoid.
Seems I had forgotten to hook up the ground wire that goes from the firewall to the manifold, fixed that and my truck started right up.
Hope this helps, took me four days and several $$ to fix such a small problem.
