No 3rd gear

99.5 350 Auto. Wont shift from 2nd to 3rd and rpms go up, speed goes down. I was on the free way towing a light boat. Normally tow a heavy fifth wheel. OD light began flashing. 65,000 mi. Any thoughts on this one. Am I looking at a rebuild?.....Ron.

Start looking for a shop to rebuild it or give Brian or John a call. That is one of the first signs of failure.

Check the level, color, smell of your fluid.

I was afraid of that. fluid and color good. Smells slightly burnt. Fluid changed 5000 mi ago. What is the price range to have these tranis rebuilt?

That would depend on what you want done to it. How much power you want it to handle. I would call around and find what each shops price is.

It's at the mechanic. He drove it and said it is shifting ok when cold. problems occur when it warms up. Gonna open it up and check it out. I pull a heavy toy hauler, so probably gonna cost to upgrade it. Thx for the response...Ron.

I've had the same thing happen to me twice and both times went for the "budget" fix. Primarily because of my age. If I were younger I would go with the BTS or John Woods. It is done for, which I'm sure you know by now. If you go for the cheaper rebuild you're looking at less than 2k.
