Question for Pete. What material would you have to use that would not soak up the oil and get dirty very quick? Will the oil discolor my filter covers. As I said before, I used a paint brush to brush bugs off the filter cover. As I was brushing the cover dust was flying off so I brush it when I have the hood open. I would like to have a cover on the new filter if it turns out to be OK. But don't know about the oil.
Rick... the straight answer is... I'm not sure what impact the oil would have.
To some degree, at least, it would depend on whether or not the filter was over-oiled and had any liquid surplus in it. If that were the case, you could probably expect to see some of the oil blow out onto the inside of the cover during hard decels when the extra boost backs itself out of the system. Given that the fabric is synthetic, it should clean up just as well with Simple Green's degreaser for "filter" oil in the same way it does from oily, grimy road dirt. There could be some darkening of the cover's appearance while dirty with the oil. Any oil which got on there would also increase the cover's ability to trap dirt.
Those are my initial thoughts at a glance. I'll have to think about it some more.
.... Wait... the Proguard 7 filter is an oil-treated filter. So, I know of a couple of guys we can talk to about this very issue because they are running my covers today. Also, Ron himself has a red cover on his PG7 element - my fabric combined with his own personal sewing skills.
So... how about it Ron... what have your observations been on this issue that Rick has brought up?
BTW, Rick... I just happen to be working not too far from you right now. I have a couple of projects over in Evadale, TX, just north of Beaumont. Got in very late Monday night, leaving Thursday to fly back out from Houston to Birmingham. If I had more time, I'd swing over to pay you a visit... perhaps on a future trip.
Pete, I am guessing that when you do get back in town we can meet up one day for lunch and let you get some measurements. Of course, I'll be happy to be your beta tester for the new cover.
Will be waiting to hear from Ron on this. I am about 35 miles from the Texas line, east on I-10 to Lake Charles, then south to Grand Lake. I would like to meet up with you when you have a chance. Spend a little more time and I will boil crawfish for you.

We might just have a deal there, Brandon. The only thing is that right now it seems that the Prattville plant's capital resources are drying up, so I'm not sure when I'll get another trip through there right now. I will be going to the Riverdale plant near Selma for a meeting on Friday morning, but I'm not sure right now if I'll be traveling by myself or with one of our purchasing guys. I should know more tomorrow, but then again you probably won't have the filter by then, either.

If I didn't miss the family so badly and also have to be in a meeting at with a client on Friday morning, I would be tempted to delay my return trip and come on over for some of those mudbugs. Perhaps I'll have a more flexible schedule on the next trip.

Thats cool, I am in BHM every now and then too. You are correct, I wont have the filter till Wednesday the 18th. Shoot, Ill just snap some pics along with the tape measure for you. I'll call you when it gets here and we can discuss.
Safe travels.

Thanks Brandon. My daughter has a pretty good hair dryer, but I don't think my truck will fit in her bathroom
I think I'll go see if I can find Ryan or Cookie now after looking at Mikes picture. I want to know if those guys can photshop some dirt on to all of you're clean engines when you post pictures so I don't feel so bad.

Hey, I'm one of those guys, you don't really notice the oil, it is absorbed into the filter media. If you used too much oil it might get on the cover. If you let it sit for a bit before re installation, there isn't much oil residue and you can wipe off the excess that might get on the non filter parts.
Quote].Out of curiosity. How long does it take a filter that big to dry after you wash it?Quote]
The AFE will dry in a couple hours if it is warm and breezy outside. Otherwise I let it sit overnight with a fan on it.
Edit: not suggested to use anyones blow dryer on reuseable filter media.
