I don't see why it would change mpg one way or the other...

Granted, I guess you could say that it might improve mpg b/c the engine wouldn't have to rev while engine braking, but i think thats minimal...

If you have an automatic tranny I read that you have to some type of torque converter lock-up gizmo to make the brake work. Check http://www.atsdiesel.com/atswebsite/...ord/Brakes.asp, I think they use the pac-brake brand which seems to be pretty well known, but I have no personal experience with it. If you have a manuel there are several brands available.

This Chip Locks the Torque converter, closes the EBP valve and defuel the engine

As mentioned above you can use a True Exhaust Brake on the 7.3. An exhaust brake will have no measured effect on MPG because it is operating while the engine is defueled on a decelleration.

The difference between an exhaust brake and a chip is that the exhaust brake turns the engine into a compressor restricting exhaust flow where as a chip may lock the converter to increase rpms during decelleration there is no restriction of exhaust flow.

If you do install an exhaust brake I highly recommend installing a Torque Loc also to gain the most out of the brake. An exhaust brake without a locked converter will be much less effective as a brake and build trans temperature unnecessarily.

If you are towing you will love an exhaust brake. On my last truck I could desend a 5% grade at road speed and never touch the truck brakes. Trailer brakes last forever because you just don't use them.

This option is not available to me with a 2004 Excursion because of the newer trans electronics. And believe me I have looked into it.

HowieE is right, if your going to run with an exhaust brake regardless of the brand you have to lock up your torque converter.

The exhaust brake is not going to do anything for your fuel mileage, it only works when your off the throttle (zero fuel)

If you tow alot exhaust brakes will save you alot money in replacing brake pads, plus it sounds cool.

From what I understand the chip is using the EBP valve as the brake.

A lot of guys in the 7.3 forum have installed a switch to control the valve as an exhaust brake. Add a TC lock for an auto tranny and you have an exhaust brake with very little money involved. I'll look for the write up on it.

Here is the info on making your own exhaust brake.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/2...highlight=EBPV

To make it work properly you need to be able to lock the TC. Guzzle has a write up on this.

http://guzzle.rbmicro.com/tclock.html

I think some guys have wired them so when the exhaust brake is on it locks the TC as well, but having the TC lock seperate has its advantages as well.

I am not sure what the Exhaust Back Pressure valve but trust me it is not an exhaust brake. An exhaust brake completely closes of the exhaust pipe.

However I highly recomend installing a TC lockup on the older trans to be able to lock the converter in the lower gears while pulling a hill or driving at lower speeds on secondary roads that don't allow you to reach speeds that the converter will lock on it's own.

If you ask some of the guys in the 7.3 forum you will find out it works quite well as an exhaust brake.
