I have a 2000 F250 crew cab V10. It has 1000 miles on it. Since I drove it off the lot, (6 week wait) it makes a loud "rattling" or "pinging" sound at 2500 rpm under load. That is while accelerating. Sounds like an old time exaust leak. It does not make the noise if it is just being reved up in nuetral or drive. Fact is I had a 99 V10 on a extra cab F250 and it purred like a kitten.
I brought it to the dealer and they said that it defenitley was not an exaust leak but Ford has a bulletin out on it (ssm#13519) that says the noise does not cause driveability issues. Obviously they had no clue what is causing it.
It sounds terrible as if there is no oil going to the valve train. It is not improving as it breaks in. However, it does seem to have good power but I am afraid to tow my boat as this would be the RPM range under load I would tow in. Is it the exaust system or the valves? does any one know?thank you.
Thanks for the reply, I have heard about the "y" pipe but I have also heard about guys getting new engines because of this. Anybody else hear that? If it is the "y" pipe, can it be fixed? Thanks, Brad.
I believe the engine replacement refers to the piston slap problems on some the v-10 and v-8 engines. The problem was fixed on any engine made after April 15, 1999. I to was worried about this after purchasing my 1999 truck (used). My engine date happens to be April 28, 1999. No PS in mine.
I also have the Y pipe vibration. Always between 2100 and 2300 rpm during normal driving. I plan on trying to add some weight, hose clamps, etc to see if I can direct the sound waves in a different pattern. It's really ruins the sound/feel of the v-10 which (having 2 more cyl) runs smoother than a v-8.

Interesting info you gave. Is your noise ike a "rattle" or "ping" while pushing it at about 2500 rpm? Let me know if your ideas help. Thanks alot. Brad

I've been driving a 1999 F250 SD V-10 4X4 Lariat for the past 2 years (one of the first 99 models made), and that V-10 has been absolutely great! I just traded it on a brand new 2000 F350 SD, same drive train, and so far, the Triton V-10 is as smooth and quiet as my first one. I have found this engine to be one of the finest gasoline truck engines I've yet to encounter. My uses included highway hauling, light off-roading, snow-plowing, and occasional towing.
I also owned a 99 F250 SD w/ a V10. it was wonderful. I tow a 5500 lb. boat and it was as smooth as silk. I now have a 2000 and it too is wonderful. It actually feels like it might have more power than the '99. Just that darn noise..... Brad.
V10is a great motor. I've got over12,000 miles. Not a problem 1 with the engine. Now that the rear end is fixed I'm gittin' 12 to a little over 13 mpg on regular gas with a K&N filter. I used to be a chevy guy, solong GM!
I have a 2000 crew cab 4x4 v10 and it too had a ping sound from the exhaust, when it was new it was loud, it only has 650 miles on it and the noise is just about gone, so I guess it goes away after break in.
