I changed my Mercon SP today and cannot get the filter canister loose. 22mm socket and an 18" breaker bar and I'm starting to bend the mounting bracket.. I used a smallwire brush up where it screw mounts mounts and sprayed some Kano Aero Kroil on it to let it penatrate. Since it's first time off at 33K and it is aluminum and has a touch of the AlKa Selzer look. I'm hoping some else has run into this. I'll go to heat or cut into it as a last straw. Any ideas out there? Thanks
Just changed mine today... Milwaukee 28V impact wrench got it loose. A breaker bar just won't cut in this situation. I've changed the FT-145 filter several times in 40K so it's just how it's gonna be!
I know there has been a few days and there is another trans service thread but my delema is about 80% complete. After the replies I crawled under the truck with my Ingersol Rand 1/2" electric impact wrench and 22mm socket. I could detect no movement. I was afraid I was going to ruin the base nut. I thought I was using a 6 point but I wasn't. I picked up an impact 22 mm impact socket and headed back under. This was after 4 day of soaking it with Areo-Kroil. After 30 minutes and a lot of back and forth with the impact and a breaker bar it actually came off. The threads of the canister were definately not perfect. I cleaned both side of the treads with a brass wire brush and now cannot get it to turn back on. I was testing it without a filter and using antisieze but to no avail. It feels out-of-round so I've found the part, 3C3Z-7R179-AA, and will get one on Tuesday to give another try.
It's amazing that this has been so hard. I know I'm the first one to take it off from new and it's also hard to believe there was no lubricant on the threads. Al to Al.
I hope it will get easier with time.................Wish me Luck
Well I'm screwed. Bought a new canister but the treads in the body are toast. I could only get about 2 threads on. I've run it for about 30 minutes and no leaks thanks to the o-ring. I decided to leave the filter out because I thought the spring on the bottom might push it off under pressure. I drilled 2 holes in the bottom "nut" and safety wired it so it wouldn't unscrew but I highly doubt that will happen.
The main problem is my son is leaving on a 2000 mile trip with it this way. I was trying to be a nice guy and have everything serviced.
Now I need to purchase and entire filter body, canister and all and have it put on. Any one have a dealer out there for parts I could mail order at a discount. This will be few buck and since I screwed it up it will be on me. The guy who put it together at the factory must have been po'ed about something to make it that tight.
You might want to look into installing a Dieselsite External filter kit. It goes on with no cutting of lines and you can leave your oem filter housing empty, As long as it is on now and not leaking.
