97 F150 with 5.4 is having rough idle issues and starts real hard. After it idles itself up it starts to slow down to 600-800 RPM and bounces in between there. If I give it gas it runs great. No missing when the throttle is put in. Ideas?
yep had the same problem it sounds like your Idle air control valve like king ranch man said, its on the back of your motor behind the throtle body. if i remember right it was about $40 at auto zone let us know how it comes out.
Ok guys, so after I left work the other night the truck was still running bad at idle. Wouldn't start unless I tapped the gas pedal with my foot either. But in the process of driving the five miles to my house the problem seems to have aleviated itself. The only thing I can think of now is that on my way to work I did step into the throttle pretty hard on the road and maybe that temporarily made something quit working right? Because now everything works fine and I can't get the problem to duplicate. Has anyone had an IAC valve that is going bad that works intermittenly? I appreciate the help guys, thanks alot!
A lot of times the IAC gets plugged with crap and it sticks in one position and that one position is temperature dependent and is most likely to be the IAC setting when the engine is fully warmed up, as a result when the engine is cold the IAC is not open enough so you have to open the throttle body to get enough air for the engine to start. If the IAC is stuck the idle will be smooth if the ambient temperature and engine temperature are at the magic spot the IAC is stuck at, and as either of the temperatures vary from that setting the idle will become rough and erratic.
