today i went to go use my 4x4 for the first time in a while. I locked the hubs, and put it in 4HI, and the 4x4 light on the dash came on but the 4x4 wasnt working. I finally got the 4x4 HI to engage and the truck started making a louded rumble noise. It definately was from a moving part cause it would be faster and the truck went faster. Then when i went to take it out of 4HI it wouldnt go back to 2wd. I checked all the fluids and they were fine. I have a 94 IDI turbo diesel. I have no idea what it could be.
I'm guessing this is in your 94? Have you checked out what it might be, u-joint, front axle, or t-case??? To me is sounds like what happened to my t-case.
If it has the BW-1356 electronic transfer case, then you more than likely broke the ears off the shift fork. They are know to do that, especially with the esof, and is why you had a hard time shifting it into and out of 4hi. It's fairly easy to fix, just pull the t-case, split the case, and replace the fork. The reason the ears break off is due to the cheesy way the oil pump retainer is mounted, so you may want to look at that while you are in it. The rattleing around you probably heard was the oil pump retainer spinning on the shaft, and chewing itself up.
yeah its on my 94, its been getting progressively worse and the noise is louder, it almost sounds like a jack hammer.
im not sure what transfer case it is, whichever one comes stock
Yeah, it has the bw 1356 case. I had the ears break off my 88's shifter, and it did the same sort of thing. It's not hard to repair, you just need an extra set of hands to help get the case in and out of the truck, as its kinda awkward.
how hard was it to put in?
i have no knowledge of transfer cases what so ever, im am good with car stuff though, ive rebuilt motors and whatnot, so it sounds like we shouldnt have a problem
I dont remember the exact steps, but it's pretty self explanitory once you get in there. You just split the case apart by taking out the torx bolts, and then you'll see the shift fork. It just rides on a shaft, and with the case apart it should all come apart pretty easily.
