I have a 87 E-350 Motor Home with a 460. I would like to put a an overdrive transmission in it. Did Ford make a AOD that would fit behind a 460? If not, what are my options? Is it possible to convert a E40D to work? Thanks
While an AOD can be bolted to a 460 with an expensive adaptor, I don't think even the $2400 AODs beefed in all fashions would be advisable for your vehicle.
So, E4OD, which will bolt up direct. You either need the engine computer etc for a vehicle originally equipped, or an aftermarket controller.
I now have a C-6. If I wanted to go with a E4OD. What model and year would I look for one? Would it have to come out of an Econoline or could it come out of a truck also?
If I found a good vehicle with an E4OD and fuel injection. Could I make all that work on mine? What other components will I need for the swap?
If you want to keep your carb engine, then you will need the E4OD and a standalone controller. Also a crossmember and probably a shortened driveshaft.
If you swap in a whole new drivetrain, then you'll need an EFI 460, wiring harness, PCM, high pressure fuel pump, in addition to the crossmember and driveshaft.
I would not even attempt this swap without a parts truck with the engine and tranny already in it and running.
I like the gear vendors idea a lot more. Less work, cheaper, less headaches.
Bolts on the trans in place of the tailshaft housing. Requires ds shortening in most cases. Click on the link in my above post.
It is possible to "split" gears with the GV, although I've read posts that said that really doesn't work very well in practice. I'd think it would work ok in some cases, esp since there is quite a spread between gears on a C6.
