I read in a previous post a couple of days ago that the casting code for the 351M is on the right side(I am assuming this is pass.) under the heads, is this correct? and if so could the number be behind the exhaust header where I couldn't see it until I pull the motor? Any advise is greatly appreciated, thank you!

If you're talking about the code on the block it's on the right side back near the starter. It shouldn't be that hard to locate once you scrape the gunk off.
Ok, I found the numbers by the starter. They are inverted, so if turned over the top tag would read(as close as I can tell): D7TE-A3B
They the top one(if inverted would be the bottom) reads: 7A27. The top of the block has the ridge by the distributer and the heads have an M on them. The reason I asked these questions is because the guy I bought the truck from said it was a 351M, but I have gotten parts for it that the parts guys said were for a 360, but they could've read the books wrong too. Any way thank you for the help bill!:-X12

I't either a 351M or 400. That is a 77 truck engine. It could have come out of a later model tho.' Definitely not an FE. The bottom number is the casting date. Probably cast in the Cleveland Foundry since they cast the date code below the casting code.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-Dec-01 AT 07:07 AM (EST)]any difference in the truck block?
i'm planning to use a 351M out of a '77 cougar to make into a 400, but i can get a junkyard short block for $75 - which would almost be worthwhile just to avoid having to pull the cougar motor and multiplying the mess in my garage! if some blocks (and cranks and rods) are better than the one i have, then that would definately be worthwhile. unfortunately, the casting #'s on the underside of the cougar motor are inaccessible right now...
Some of the 400 blocks had cracking problems in the block, right below the deck, on the inside of the lifter valley. Early blocks had this problem, and the later ones they cast a X into the block to strengthen the block. I wrote about this in another post. I'd check this out before you buy a block.
those were the ones that were cast at the michigan casting center and cast before a date in 1977, i forget the date, i think mar 21. but dont quote on that.
D7TE (truck blocks) and D8 (car blocks) have extra metal in the main webbing area. They take a different main bearing than the pre '77 351M/400 blocks.
