Burning to much fuel
I have a 1992 Non-turbo IDI 5 speed 2WD
I just replace my injection pump 2 times. Got the pumps from O'reilly. So after the second time I thought I did something wrong so sent it to a shop. They told me the injection was basically trashed wasn't doing what is what supposed to do. So on the 3rd pump I got a good one and took it back to the shop to get my truck time and had them turned the pump up a little to give me more power. I have tested all the injector and all tested good beside one and replace it. I have replace Glow plug, glow plug relay, solenoid on fender, fuel filter, fuel pump (replace about a year ago)
The problem I'm having is I'm burning up to much fuel and lose of power going up small hills. I thought by them turning the injection pump up it would help out but all im getting is black smoke when going up a hill. Faster take off but really nothing after 4 gear. I'm learning as I go on this. Truck was my first truck so I'm kinda at a stand still on why I'm burning so much fuel. 68 miles im burning over a half a tank. Running only front tank, but i know i had better fuel mileage before this injetcion pump was put on. So should I turn the pump back down or do I have another problem somewhere? Thanks.
if you are getting black smoke out of the exhaust, you are over fueling the engine.
you want to see just a very slight haze out of the exhaust on a full throttle up hill run.
wanna know what happens to an over fueled engine?
look at pictures closely.
IMO, a pyrometer is a must on any diesel.
i cracked every single piston, and the driverside head is cracked inbetween every valve.
temps got up to 1250, sometimes peaking to 1300.
i tried to drive by pyro, but ended up cooking it.

Thanks for the info, I love the pictures and having numbers to go with the carnage.
For the OP, turn your pump down! :P
And install a pyrometer!!
I agree with the others, I'm running N/A and without a pyro I would have ruined my engine a long time ago. Heck I didn't even turn up the pump when I put in the pyro and with that setup towing a 4K trailer up small mountains(common in my area) I saw quickly that I was cooking my engine on long climbs. This was with stock everything, and a rebuilt pump.
That was a few years ago, and so far so good, thank God, but now that I'm tuning it I'd be toast in short order without it.

still produced 10 psi.
and innercooled.
pyro located between #6&8 on exhaust manifold.
105 cc pump
when i saw temps reach 1200 i tried to stay out of it.
temps were only for a short amount of time.
